Steering is loose?

Steering is loose? I recently did a motor swap, so I had to disconnect the steering column and remove the knuckle thing. I put it all back together the right way but now no matter how much I tighten it the steering has a "loose" spot on center, like 1" travel each way that it does absolutely nothing. Does anyone know how to fix that and make it tight again?
