I could be wrong but i believe 98s had crappier heads, smaller injecters, and somthing with the computer was different..maybe a few other differences. Also 01-02 cars got the ls6 intake and some had the ls6 block. Dont quote me on any of that though.

Let put it this way. there is nothing wrong wtih the new and greatest LS1 in 1998, comparing it to the older SBC Gen I and II... it is just that 99 had a lot of improvements over the current design of the 98 designes in the oiling system, Cylinder head design (port flowing). Block design. Fuel rail (returnless vs return). If you do enough research you will find the many changes that have evovled over the years..
But many have used the 98' block to much success and many have had failure if pushed to far. So.. depnding on what your goals are and what your driving habits are .. the 1st design of the LS1 may do it. or not.. Daily crusiser or drag strip only !

Nothing is wrong with the 98's as long as you find one that's been maintained, but of course that goes with any year LS1 F-body. Here's the main cliff notes...
Cons:
-The 98 PCM SUCKS, thats the biggest draw back
-The heads have perimeter bolt valve covers and each coil is individually bolted to the cover. Nothing major here, just makes it a lot more of a pain in the *** to get the heads and/or valve covers off
-LS1 intake, just like 99-00 cars
-Were known for oil pump failures
-Heavier, metal gas tanks
Pros:
-Working temp gauge
-Great bang for the buck because they're so cheap now
-98's have bigger injectors than 99-00. 98's, 01-02 cars all have 28lb injectors
-Everything listed in the cons section can be replaced for upgraded parts
I wouldn't hesitate to buy a 98 if I was in the market, and I found one that was well taken care of. With a few minor touch ups they're just like the rest of them.

I know of a local guy who had a couple rod bolts fail on his 98 TA. I guess this is a common problem with most LS1s but the 98s seem to be worse.
I had mine(along with the bearings) changed by the guys at the local speed shop and have had no issues for the past 4 years.
The tuning should not be a problem if your tuner has some experience with them. Aside from that, the only thing I dislike is the metal gas tank. I cured that with the trap door trick.
