Default ignition relays do thet go bad ?

Having starting problems, starts when it feels like it. I have all power in the dash lights, battery is good . It does not turn over sometimes. Just one click. Try it later and it starts right up fast. I took the ignition relay out and tapped on it and it started. Took it for a drive, got home turned it off and tryed to restart and nothing so I tapped on the relay and it fired up again. Does the relay send power to the starter or solonoid ? . The car has 28,000 miles.

Check if its a VATS (search) problem. Exchange starter and ignition relays which I believe are the same type.

relay sends power to the starters own internal relay. starter has two wires normally connected to it, one small one and one large one. large one is the direct battery supply and the small one is the relay signal wire. more massive motors use even more extensive relay networks to trigger motor starts.

I thought my starter relay was bad, ended up being corroded starter terminals. I ended up bringing the new starter back, as I removed the old one, cleaned up the terminals, and putt it back on. Never a problem since. Hint: Don't take the starter apart, you need about 17 fingers to hold everything in place to put it back together.
