Default Wideband is off the charts

I got my wideband in the mail and went and ahead and hooked it up tonight. I don't have any exhaust on the car and the sensor is about 6 inches from the end of the collector. I fired the car up just to see and the guage maxed out immediately-17+... is this a typical happening with a wide-open header? I know the mixture isn't that lean at idle, if anything, it's way rich.
Carb'd LS by the way.

I'll get the exhaust on it this week.

Probably just too much fresh air reversion into
the collector, between exhaust pulses. Go get
a few feet of flex tube and put it over the open
end, or something?

Thanks...
I went and stuck the 18" extension on that went to the ORY I used to run. Guage read 12.7-13.0 while idling.
