what about an 8.1 or vortec 8100 swap?
anyone done or started one of these swaps? i found a longblock relatively cheap low miles full harness ecu and accesories(700). Is it worth the swap or just a ls1 should be ok. I dont care for the weight, just wondering if anyone has ever done one. pics would be cool. i got a 1st gen s10 and a first gen camaro i can stick it in.

I had a 8100 in my 67 Chevy pickup for a while. TH400, 373 it was always turning some RPM, I probably got about 15 MPG out of it. Probably got better if had an overdrive. 3900 lb pickup.
I recently modified a 8100 harness for a guy putting a 8100 in a wrangler! seems overkill for the jeep, but anyways, here's a picture.
also attached, slightly modifying one valve cover bolt hole, aftermarket valve covers will bolt on, and Summit sells a ARP rocker stud, that will let you run adjustable valve train. M10x1.5 bottom thread, 7/16 top thread. Those are standard BBC 1.7 roller rockers.
I had installed a ZZ502 crate engine camshaft, I was running Megasquirt, with ford EDIS 8 ignition control, so the firing order change did not make a difference to me. Only thing I'd done different was upgrade the valve springs. Stock ones have 89lbs on the seat.
Any mark 5/6 roller camshaft will intall in it, PCM would need programmed for firing order change (I hear this is possible now) Mahle makes a better piston for these engines (pistons seam to be weak spot on these).

Heads are cast iron, however, will only work with 8100 blocks. The head bolt pattern is different, a few moved around, plus two additional head bolts per head.
They do similar tall intake ports like the lsx, and no water into the intake.
here's picture of an intake port, after my 8100 blew up.

too much rpm was likely the cause. The pistons are weak so I hear in these motors. I bought a second 8100 after that one blew up, and when I was going to put it in, I found out it too had suffered the same fate, piston shattered into 1000's of pieces, leaving only the wrist pin still on the rod.

Not trying to hijack the thread but for anyone interested in going this route I have a 8.1 fresh from the builder and never fired.. Here's the specs:
HEADS
-Exhaust ported and bowls cleaned up
-Went from stock 1.74 exhaust valves to Manley 1.88 stainless
-2.19 intake
BLOCK
-Decked
-Line bored
-Balanced
-Eagle rods
-Stock 4 3/8'' crank
-BHJ balancer
-JE pistons (9:1)
-Comp Cams hydraulic roller w/560's lift
I had it bored out to 502cu! Big cubes, full roller and fuel injection
I planned on putting this in my '65 Chevelle but I've been laid off so the project has been put on hold. I would be willing to sell the engine but I'm keeping the Chevelle.
