Default Could I get some spark plug & wires help?

No one really ever looks in general maintenance, and I know a lot of you guys in here are very handy around the LS1. so here goes (mods, move if need be)

I wanted to just pull out one of the plugs today to check them. My spark plug socket wouldn't fit over it because the end of the plug would stick through where you attach the ratchet. Do I need a deeper one or something? This is my first time ever touching them on an LS1. There was something different looking on the plug (wire side) that I didn't recognize.

Also, my car has about 500 horses at the crank, do I need to gap the plugs differently? I read that for every 50/100 horspower your supposed to remove something from the factory gap specs.

Also my car is pretty heavily modded, heads, cam, fuel system modified full bolt ons all of that. Should I keep running NGK TR-55's or should I run the TR-6's? Also any recommendations on the plug wires?

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

I justed changed my plugs today using a normal 5/8" deep socket 3/8 drive, S/K brand. I've never had to use a plug socket on this engine. I would stick with a tr55 and get some MSD wires. One thing I use is a 2'' extension to get at the # 5,7,6,8 plugs the 4" is too long on the deep socket. Also pull the coil pack off the pass side rocker cover to get some more room. One more thing put alitle high temp anti seize on the threads of the plugs and some dielectric greese on the top of the plugs before you snap the wire on.

I even went and got a regular 5/8" and it still wouldn't go. There was something on the end of the plug that .. Didn't look like the plug? If I don't figure it out I'll take a pic.

So anti seize on the side of the plug that goes in the motor, and dielectric grease on the top end?

Thanks man

Hey Brian.

I am at 419 RWHP, my tuner told me to use NGK TR6 plugs. It is a colder plug, and even n NGKs website it says for every 100 HP over stock use a colder plug.

That is JMO....

X2... There has to be something stuck on the top of the plug. Yes the hi temp anti seize on the threads going in to the heads and the dielectric on top of the plug. This will help so you so the wires pull off the spark plug with out braking on you again.

Dielectric grease on the end of the plug NOT inside your engine, to help conductance through the wire to the end of the plug.

You really don't need the TR6 plugs unless you're gonna do FI or spray, but if you want to, go ahead and use them. Honestly, I'd just go get some ac delco plugs from an auto store if you don't want to be changing plugs a lot. They'll last a long time unlike the TR6 and TR55 which get changed out every 30k miles or so.

That sounds about right, the plug wire probably did break. 'Cause when I went to put it back on, it wouldn't stay on tight. I'll go check now..

And thx Jonas. Do I have to get the TR6's online? Will I be able to find MSD wires at Advance Auto parts or anything?

Well, I went and checked, and sure enough, something is stuck pretty good over the spark plug. I was gonna go get a pair of pliers to pull it off, but if I do that I probably won't be able to get that wire to operate properly, and I don't have plugs and wires ready to swap, so I'm leaving it for now. I do have two extra factory plug wires in the trunk, but that'd probably be a bad idea to have 7 taylor wires and 1 factory, right? lol

Give 99BlancoSS a PM and tell him what you need. He will get you the best deal on MSD Wires and NGK Plugs that you will find. Great price and free shipping. You won't find a better deal or a nicer guy to help you tune up your F-Body.
