Default another 10 bolt story

Well, Im surprised it lasted as long as it did in my M6, broke a spyder gear off on a lazy 2.0 60 ft. I guess its time for a real rear now. Im running thnder 224 cam, stage 1 heads, ls6 intake. I would like to be able to run 11's all day long with my new rear but have been hearing some all to familiar stories with the moser 12 bolt as I had with my 10 bolt. Realisticly I make about 20 passes a year at the track, and limited street racing. Will I be able to run a 12 bolt with 1.8 to 1.7 60 fts with a stock weight car, and not have to worry about junking another rear, or do I need to go to a 9 inch? Thanks for your insight

What is so special about the Ford 8.8 rear?? Is it stronger than a 12 bolt/9 inch?? I know it weighs less, but anything else?

Ask my brother, he's around here. mikeyws6 or something. He's got the ford conversion 8.8 with abs/tcs. As i understand it is far cheaper, and after seeing him drag/race/highway he gives the rear no mercy. 5500 launchs with ET's lol. I think hes replacing his mcleod clutch disc this weekend. I'll ask about the pricing n stuff unless he comes along this thread.

I think the 12 bold vs the 8.8 is prety close aside from the ability to swap centers, and set mesh on the bench with the ford. I have been hearing of alot of 12 bolts letting go lately and i think the answer lies in the way they are being setup.

To be honest I would consider the 8.8 very seriously. I have seen 9 second mustangs on this rear personally, which I thought was impressive. I did a search on the 8.8 before my original post but was unsuccessful, i just figured that few people were running them. All i need is a rear that I can pull decent 60 ft and run 11's with all day long with a stock weight car. I will be running drag radials for the most part. Whoever has info on the 8.8 , please chime in, Its just another good option for people. Thanks

MNSS - I have heard alot of stories about people breaking rear ends. I have been very fortunate and not broke mine yet. I have a black 98 SS M6 running 1.60 to 1.55 60' times on Nitto 555 DR and mid to high 11's with zero problems. Just wondering what you thought might have caused your failure. Most of the time when a spider gear breaks it is on a burn-out when one tire stops spinning and the other still spin and then stops and hits the rear very hard at the and of the burn-out. What ET's and MPS are you running? Any guess on HP?

I had suspected I may have broke my rear just as you said, in the burnout box! Its hard to say. TO answer your questions Im running high 12's at 113 mph at the track. The biggest limiting factor is my 60 fts which are low 2.0's. I know i could do better but I have seen to many 10 bolts blow, and am afraid to actually leave hard at the track, this causes a terrible bog with the 342's killing my times and mph. I cant believe you have had such great luck with yours, that cool. I know the 342 are killing me with my setup, going to 410 with new rear. My rear broke when i was pushing an un tuned 385.5 rwhp@ 6250 and 369 rwtq. Is your rear completely stock, no upgraded axles or anything? How about the weight of your car is that stock or have you done reductions? Im curious to see how you have mangaged to cut a 1.5 60 with a 10 bolt?!!!!

The rear end in my car is completly stock with the 3.42's. I have thought about purchasing a main cap stud kit and a T/A cover that my freind took out of his car when he sold it. I have a Sphon adjustable tourque arm, control arms and panhard bar as the only mods to the suspension. As far as the weight of the car I have done nothing to remove weight. What else do you plan on doing to your car to get to the 11's it seems that you need more than 60' to get to that point. I have many freinds that run mid 12's at Englishtown with virtually the same mods.

Getting into the 11's on the motor is not that difficult. As you stated programming is a huge factor. I have been thinking about running nitrous, but have yet to do it. I don't know if I can send my computer back to TPIS and have them reprogram and get as good of results without them running the car as they did the first time. As for the rear end with almost 200 runs in the past year and a half.... only time will tell.

TPIS did all your tuning? They seem to be figuring out these ls1 more everyday. There located right here in my back yard
Tpis like to use that sniffer system on the roads huh? Are you from around here or did you just do business out here with your car. Your post just sunk in, 200 runs on that 10 bolt?! Whats you secret?

I guess you are close to TPIS, I just noticed that you are from Minnesota. I lived in Circle Pines for a few years, but moved out here in the spring. We took my car to a chassis dyno that they use quite often to tune the car. As far as my secret to the rear end holding up, I have no idea. I abuse the crap out of that car!!

He is bitter because he has broken his 10 bolt in a 3rd gen Camaro twice now in a year. It does have a heads cam, and blower on it with a nicely converted six speed in place of the a4.

I take it you guys are freinds. Just curious, but did the same guy set up both of your rears. That might be part of the problem of them breaking so frequently. There are a few fast 3rd gens in that area, but I do not remember one with a blower, is this car new to the area?
