Default Need some tire help DR VS bias plys

I could use some tire help. We are a roadrace shop and we are building my wives 99 FRC we are using a 500RWHP motor with another 300 direct port shot the car should be in the 3100# range. We are converting it to a 4L60 with a brake with a lot of help from RPM Transmission.
I am thinking I will probably need to go with a 16 inch setup and bias plys but I have heard of guys having great luck with the 345-18 drag radials. I already have several sets of 18x12 ccws so it would be nice if I could use the 18's.
I guess the main question is how much if any would I be giving up in a well preped car on the radials VS bias plys?
I should also mention 15 inch wheels will not clear the control arms.

Thanks, Dale

I think you should get as much sidewall as you can under there. I'd go for some custom 16x10 Bogarts with some 28x10.5 Hoosier QTPs probably.

Thanks, I should have mentioned we will be running different street wheels and tires.

I have narrowed it down to 3 choices I think.

MT DR's 345-18's
M&H DR's 345-18's
MT Bias Plys 28x11.5x16

If anyone has any input on the comparason of these three I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks again, Dale

Well I will mention that the M&Hs run EXTREMELY narrow for what they advertise the width to be. The MT is probably 1.5-2" wider. Hope this helps.

I had a lot more luck hooking on the bias plys than the radial on test n tune nights at kilkare, it was a 26x10.5x16 tho. 18s you are giving up a lot of sidewall.

500 w n/a plus a 300 hit is not gonna get down the track at all with an 18 inch wheel.

If you want to drag race... best start looking at a 15 inch rim setup, and change what is nessassary to get it to work, especially with the power level you're looking at.

Either that, or get ready for some seriously dissappointing track times. Like I wouldn't go telling anyone you're hitting it with 300 when you're at the track, I'd be telling them it's a 100 shot, becuase you'll be running times like that's what you're hitting it with.

Thanks but 15's will not fit a vette even with the rear brakes removed. We WILL get the car to hook. We know a thing or two about suspension. I own a shop and we are primarily a roadrace shop but we have set up some of the fastest quick 10.5 cars and have a couple vetts running consistant bottom 9's on 16 inch bias plys. The 345-18's have 10 inches of sidewall 5 a side.
There are a few guys running mid 9's on the 18's here are a couple http://shinkaze.com/2008/09/ips-moto...te-z06-932156/
I dont know what their 60 foots are so I dont know if they giving a lot up with the 18's.

Impressive, but the problem is that 156 mph is good for about 8.60

There's a big difference from a 16 inch tire to a 18 inch tire. But, you're gonna find that out

You're running separate street and race tires. Are you changing at the track or trailering? If so, don't compromise. Run the most sidewall you can and bias plys will flex more.

C'mon man you came into this section asking for help and you are just ignoring people. I really hate it when people ask for help but won't take any advice. Why ask for help in the first place, you are only wasting your time and others. More sidewall = better / safer

I am not ignoring anyone's advice. What I am trying to ignore are the smartass comments about how big a shot I should tell people I am running and that the car will not go down the track at all on 18's. If I could run 15's I would, but as stated in the original post they will not clear the control arms. I am not trying to run 18's because they look pimp, I am thinking about them because they give me the widest footprint with the same sidewall. I agree 100% more sidewall is better. Maybe I did not ask the question correctly. I know of many C5's cutting 1.3x 60 foots on 26x10x16 Hoosiers
26inch tire-16inch rim= 10 inches of sidewall
28inch tire -18inch rim= 10 iches of sidewall
So I guess my question should have been, will a wider DR with the same sidewall work as well as a narrower Bias ply.
But I dont want to waste any more of your valuable time so a will order a set of each and see what works better.
Thanks again to everyone who actually tried to help, Dale

What about a 28" tire on a 16" rim?
