Default T56

Hi everyone,

I'm building a tube frame car and I'm planning on using the LS1/T56 combo. I don't want to dish out $4000 for the engine and transmission yet, and I've been looking around for mock up engines and transmissions. I found an engine, but I can't find a T56 with an LS1 bell housing.

There's a local guy who's selling a "core" with no bell housing, but it's from a 94 LT1. I was wondering if it's possible to use a 93-97 T56 with an LS1 bellhousing. Can anybody help?

Thanks in advance!

You need a midplate as well (along with teh bellhousing) and the input shaft is different (but should not matter for you since you are only using it for mock up)

Also, the 93 is by itself, 94-97 is another and then 98-up.

Now, is the midplate and bell the same on teh 93 and 94-97? I believe so (believe it is jsut internal that is different)

What I am 100% on is if it is 94-97, then YES, it will work with a midplate and bellhousing swap and MAYBE if it is a 93

Thanks for your reply. What exactly is this midplate you're talking about?

The very front plate of the Transmission..it's what the LS1 Slave or the LT1 Fork bolts to.

It is what The merv just said. You have teh transmission, than midpalte (about 1 1/2-2" thick) than teh bellhousing. When looking at teh transmission from the side, look at where the bellhousing meets the "tranny"....that is actually the midplate. Then if you go back another 1 1/2-2" you will see another parting line, and that is the end of teh midplate. The midplate (and input shaft) is different on LS and LT cars because teh LT uses a clutch fork and teh LS does not (obviously)

Here is a pic of a LT T56, from left to right.......Bellhousing, midplate (it is the part that has the cut-out where the clutch fork is) than the tranny itself:

And here is an LS T56 (can you see teh difference in midplates?)
