Drawbacks of TH400 in a basically stock F Body
Here is the deal. Have a 2000 Trans am A4 with bolt ons. (LT's, ORY, Catback etc) The plan for this car is to eventually build it in to a strip car but in the meantime i still cruise it alot on the street.
The trans just went out and i want to put a TH400 in it with reverse manual valve body. I will be about another year out before i am able to build the motor. So my question is, would there be any problems having this trans for a year on a basically stock motor? I normally put a about 1500-2000 miles on it during the cruising months. I just hate to rebuild the stock trans and then a year later have the car ready for a more serious trans.
Sorry for the long read.

as long as you don't mind the higher cruising rpms and resultant loss of gas mileage you should be fine.
The biggest drawback i could see would be the need to swap out the converter when you put the new motor in.

I know alot of street cars running 3 speeds...as long as you choose the right converter and gears your car will be fine....remember cars and trucks used to come from the factory with these things....

Yea i am not too worried about the RPMS or gas mileage. This isnt a daily driver and very limited miles for the year and i think so far this summer i was on the highway 1 time.

I would probably need to swap convertors regardless of trans with a new motor setup to utilize the pwer right?

Stock 10 bolt with the 3.23. Never put a gear in this car because i didnt want to waste money on the stock 10 bolt.

I have a TH400 with 3.46's and 26" tall tires. It's not that bad on the street. Works pretty well actually. Still get decent mileage at cruise rpm also. City mileage sucks though. My FTI converter also drives nice on the street. They built the transmission also. Give them a call about a package deal.
