installing starter - am i missing something??
Just put in an MSD-5096 starter on my LS1. The flexplate is stock. I noticed that there is quite a gap between the teeth of the flexplate and the starter. Am I missing something here? I know the starter comes with shims, but I thought that was for the long bolts that bolt the starter to the block...sorry guys I'm confused. What I do I need to do to get the teeth to mesh so the starter can turn the flexplate?
Thanks yet again for any help

If you install it with the teeth of the starter ingaged with the teeth on the flywheel you will have a big problem to say the least...when you turn the key the bendix moves the teeth on the starter and it engages those teeth with the teeth on the flywheel...did you ever hit the starter with the engine already running ... ouch ... now do you see what I am saying...hook it up and start the car.

Will do Shov. I got the starter in, and torqued to spec (32 ft lbs according to MSD). Bolted up no problem and cleared my headers. So now I'm starting to wire the engine with a Painless Performance engine harness and I'm totally overwhelmed. So when I figure all that crap out I will let you know how the starter works!

I've got most of the wiring harness stuff figured out but these things I need to research:
• Gear Indicator switch
• Reverse Lockout Solenoid (wtf is that?)
• Skip Shift Solenoid
• TRANS. (big grey plug with lots of pins)
• Brake Switch
• CKP (wtf is that?)
• Air Solenoid Relay
• Air Pump Relay
• Canister Vent
• Canister Purge
Off to drink beer and do more research!

LOL I know dude. I suck! Just got back from vacation so that slowed me down some. And a seller on here sent me the wrong starter, that took forever, and my LS1 intake system wouldn't allow my hood to shut, so I'm going the LT1 cai route.
