Default sorry another cam question, but i cant decide...

Gday people,

Im from australia and own a 2002 HSV Maloo R8 ute (approx weight 1600 kg). Its is LS1, T56 6 speed manual, 3.7 diff gears. Mods i have done are 1 3/4 4>1 Difilippo long tube headers, hiflow cats and dual 3" cat back (for those that dont know it is a very very good system, probably the best available in oz), also done mafless tune and OTRCAI. Everything else is stock, aside from LS6 manifold.

What do i want from a cam.. The car is a daily driver, chasing broad power range with large amounts of torque, want a mean deep exhaust note and lope at idle (deep and rumpy, not pop corny - i take it this is mostly in the tune anyway) and dont want excessive fuel consumption over what i have now (understandable that a cam will increase fuel consumption thou so not too phased). Torque and exhaust note are my main priorities. At this stage i have looked at TSP 228R and few of the mid 220 split duration cams from Futral Motorsports.

Looking for suggestions, feedback, experiances.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

I was also in the business for shopping for a camshaft. And from what I have shopped and around and researched it sounds like the tsp 228r is everything your looking for.

hey dude Im from oz as well.

I have a Vu SS im goin to be looking at one of ed curtis grinds from flowtech inductions. At moment the streetsweeper HT has caught my eye.
Specs: 228*-232*-111*-.612"-.600"

also have a look at the "el torro" and Patrick G's torque cam.
a couple of the guys on our ozzy ls1 forum are using versions of patrick g's torque cam with success.

cheers,

gav

Bingo, you hit it on the nose.

I am the designer of "El toro" and seing that you have cats, a standard split would act better. El Toro, 230/230 likes true duals or catless with cutout, basicaly a very free flowing exhaust.

Ed curtis Streetsweeper HT is one of the best grinds for street oriented Zeta based vehicles with LS1/LS6 motors (due to their heavy weight).
Get the whole matched valvetrain as well, you will not regret it.

Hey Pred,

Thanks for the advice mate, i was just about to send you a PM. So are you saying that because i have cats, i need to have a tradiational split because of the restriction of the cats?

Would the streetsweeper be too large for a DD car, based on my description and requirements above, would i be better suited to a 224/228 or round abouts that split? Or these...

FM-F5-112 FMS Custom Grind Camshaft - 224"/228" .588"/.576" 112LSA - aggressive profile with a 1800-6600 RPM range, fair idle

FM-F6-112 FMS Custom Grind Camshaft - 226"/230" .575"/.595" 112LSA - semi-aggressive profile with a 2000-6800 RPM range, rough idle

Cheers

No it is not large by any means and it has perfect overlap for strong powerband both below and top of curve.

Cam only? No way.
Also lift at .050 has almost nothing to do with PTVC. Max lift occur close to BDC (Bottom Dead Center) and any contact occurs close to TDC (Top dead Center), (aproximate range 10* Before TDC to 10* After TDC)
A lot of poeple confuse advertised lifts with TAPPET lifts.

We have a new TSP camshaft that uses TSP proprietary lobes that I think would work well for us. It's a 229/234 with right at 620ish lift. I prefer it to be ordered on a 111, but we also offer it in 112 & 113.

The 228R camshaft is also a good camshaft, but when engine dyno tested next to the 229/234 camshaft I really liked the improved power from the 229/234 camshaft & it made power a little bit earlier thanks to the LSA & advance.

If you decide you want a 228R I think we have one on a 112 left in the TSP garage sale for $300!!

I can vouch for the TSP228R - really impressed and had for about 5000KM now.

PAC 1518 beehive springs, as for pushrods the best way is to measure, since your car is made in Aussieland, it would be hard to say for sure what lifters are in there.
Right here in Dubai we have Lumina SS (made in Australia, same as Monaro {2 door} and Comodore {4 door} I believe) and I use 7.425 Comp Cam.
Check your PM.

Thanks Pred, yer 7.425 seem what most are running over here with similar sized cams, they say you can get away with 7.400s but the extra length quitens the valvetrain down abit.

Cheers

IF you havent bought a cam yet... get a custom grind cam specific for your mods/wants! Its the best way to go, no off the shelf cam will meet your needs/wants better then a custom specd cam!

I bet if your ask Predator-Z i bet he'll hook you up! lol.... he's darn good at it!
