Default Chevy 307 oil leak (fuel pump area)

I got oil dripping down, thought maybe i could ask some of you where i could be expecting the leak to be from before i cleaned everything off and checked again.

Is there a common place for it to leak from down there? Heres a few pictures i took today. BTW its oil not gas.

Yes it can leak there, it looks like it's been dripping for some time.

I would check your front intake seal too, they can leak and run down the face of the motor.

there is a gasket that sits between your fuel pump and block. Your fuel pump is held on by two bolts, remove the lines, clean the mating surfaces, and install a new gasket, 2bucks from autozone. Should take care of your problem, if that is indeed wher e the leak is from.

On the small block Chevy there are two bolt holes on the face (front) of the block in the area just to the right of the fuel pump boss arranged vertically. One of the bolt holes is not blind and goes right into the valley where the fuel pump pushrod resides. If there is no bolt in that hole (with sealer on the threads), it will leak oil from there. I can't remember if it's the top hole or the bottom, but it's something to check. A lot of people, including myself, forget that little gem.

307 in a 1st gen? Someone must have put it in there. And if it's in the Firebird, yank it out and put a 455 Pontiac in it's place.

It's the top one. Don't use to long of a bolt, 1/2" or shorter or you will jam it against the fuel pump push rod and wipe out the cam lobe. And it will be horizontal, vertical is up and down. But great catch.

Hey, I was close! Lol! I haven't worked on a small block in years, just LS stuff. Actually, the last engine I built from the ground up was a small block Ford! Anyway, I know there are those bolt holes and the one will **** oil all over if you don't close it up, I just couldn't remember (obviously) the orientation or which one was open. Thanks for the correction!

Well in the processes of replacing the oil pan gasket with a 1 piece rubber steel core. I hope it will stop the leaks, might have to check the straightness of the pan too. I also found a small coolant leak on the radiator tank, how much is it to replace the tanks? Appears to be the original radiator.

Yeah had the 307 when i bought it. I kind of like the mpg it gives its not too bad for a V8. i drive it quiet a bit, why i been keeping it. Was planning to get a Pontiac 400/455 someday. If i come across one hard finding them around here.

Is it the palstic/aluminum radiator? My mom had hers done in her Exploder last week and cost around $250. that was driving it to the rad shop and dropping it off.

I just sold my extra 455 a couple of months ago. Have an extra th400 for a BOP. You can get 400's out of 76-77 Grand Prix's pretty easy. Then take a 400 block bore it .030 and a 455 crank and turn the mains down to 3" and build a 455 from a 400. Nobody will know whaat's inside as the external deminsions of most Pontiacs are the same.

Start here on your Pontiac build http://www.ohiocrank.com/pont_rotate.html

OH yea, if you build it right, you can get very good mpg. I had a 77 Bird with a 455 and got 26 on the highway. Thanks to the right Crane Cam and 2.41 gears.

The radiator looks aluminum, ill take a picture of it later today (just been busy).

Thanks for the link ill check it out. That's awesome about your 77 Firebird getting those mpg numbers. I think the rear gear choice had a lot to do with it. Id love to have a big cube Pontiac setup eventually.

Im still waiting for the pan gasket that i orderd from summit should come in today i think.
Link to the gasket i bought. Let me know thoughts on this gasket if its any good.

Great! found out its not the pan gasket lol

It was leaking from back of the power steering pump running down the swaybar making it look like its leaking from a different location. i got that leak fixed and now i see another leak from the gear box.

So looks like im going to pull the gear box and go from there. Does anyone know what seal to replace and whats involved, it looks like its leaking from the top of the gear box where the adjuster nut and valve assembly, stub shaft.

You should be able to buy a gear box from any auto parts store with a lifetime warranty.

Yup i finally bought a new steering gear box to replace. My radiator started leaking so ended up replacing it with summitracing alumin.

In the mean time out of all things found out my intake manifold was cracked and leaking coolant now im about to buy a new intake manifold.

Could you tell me which one to get, i dont understand what the difference in performance if any. Id like to go with one of them, i have a Quadrajet carb. Would i be able to run Holley carb if i went with #7104 ?

Edelbrock Performer RPM #7104 (for quadrajet)
Edelbrock Performer RPM #7101
Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap #7501

I would go with the Air Gap. Keeps the heat off of the carb, not much taller than stock, so eveything should fit under the hood.
