I've been driving my dad's 2010 CTSV with the A6 for about the past week (he bought one and promptly left the country on vacation so I went over and raided the keys to 'break' it in for him) and that car is spectacular.
I already want to trade in my Z06 (which is my tuned track car) on a M6 CTS-V because I can't believe how much fun these supercharged LSA cars are to drive. The rest of the car is so well put together: great ride, great interior, etc. I was thinking about buying a BMW M3 for the past few months, but the V made me completely forget all about that.
Cadillac has a definite winner on their hands.

Don't get me wrong, I love my V1, I think it's funner to drive in a hot rod muscle car feel to it kinda way. It's so raw compared to the V2, but that V2 in stock form is light years beyond the V 1 in fit and finish. It's so easy to drive, steering is superb, and the power, my God the power. It's so smooth compared to the V1 you have to keep your eye on the speedo or you'll be pulling some stupidity in seconds. And like a couple of you said, this is a serious winner, and for under $60k now....wow.

I tangled with one on the highway in PA. Rolling from 60 in third it was no contest. He ate me for lunch. Rolling from about 90 in 4th it was a pretty even run. I couldn't catch him, but he couldn't run away from me either. It may have been different if we were on a flat, straight road where hills and corners weren't a factor, but who knows. I have an '05 that is basically stock other than a Magnaflow cat-back and a K&N in the stock airbox. The '09 had a pretty hefty looking guy driving as well as a passenger in the car. Either way it was a fun time, and definitely made that stretch of my MI to VA trip pass by much quicker.

Doms,
You won't be that impressed with the new M3 if you already have an S5. My wife wanted an M3 also, so we test drove a few of them a couple months ago. We ended up buying the 2010 Audi S5 cabrio instead. Audi has a much nicer interior, and looks far less common than the 3-series.
And the original poster is correct. The M3 is outright boring once you drive a new CTS-V. I bought a new V for myself.

really Nine?
I'm not inpressed with the S5 AT ALL. It's so slow. I liked the M3 and what can be done to it after market. Like the V, but the M3 looks better to me. (I also need to drive the V)
I love the S5 looks, but hate that it's so slow and has zero mods.... IDK It seems I'm never satisfied. (but I do love my z now that I can drive her!!!)

The new V leaves them both in the dust. That car is so much improved in every aspect.
If you're in that price range and you don't take the opportunity to drive one, you're doing yourself a disservice.

You guys that think the M3 is fast are kidding, right? Go test drive a new one, they are torqueless wonders. Nice handling and brakes, cool looking for sure. Fast? Nope. Feels like any other 13 second car....that costs $60K. I'd still own an M3, but I sure wouldn't be buying one because of how fast they are.
No, the S5 is not as quick. But, I don't consider either car quick anyways. The CTS-V would stomp a huge mudhole in the rear of either car.
