Engine Clattering/ticking, mildly loud
About a week ago my 2000 Pontiac trans am started with a loud clattering/ticking noise. It only happens in the mornings after my car has been sitting for a while. Currently I have an oil leak.. not BAD but its also not small.
when I rev the engine the noise gets louder, when I rev it even higher the noise stops. The workers at Autozone agreed that it is probably the oil settling to the bottom of the engine after a while and the reason it stops after about 5-10 mins is because the oil has reached the top.
Recently, the engine light came on and told me I needed to replace one of my oxygen sensors. For whatever reason the light turned off and hasn't come back on for a while. (Just telling incase this helps any)
Im going to go ahead and get a video in order for the sound to be heard within the next week. (too tired at 6am to videotape my car engine )
If any more information is needed let me know.

That video has examples of two problems. I hear lifters clattering, which is the more random, faster ticking/clicking.
I also hear the low, dud noise, that is known as piston slap. You can hear the piston slap more when he slightly brings the idle up.

its your lifters man. no need to worry. but make sure you dont have gunk in your oil. if you do it can stop up your pick up tube and cause low oil feed to the top. if there is no sludge, what weight oil are you using in the car and is it synthetic or not?

5w30 .. it wasn't synthetic...
Is driving it like this going to cause any future damage?
Update: I bought some synthetic oil today and put it in..

i had a ticking lifter and was running synthetic 5w30. i switched to a conventional gtx oil 10w40 and I don't hear lifters anymore. I was told by several shops to switch to a conventional for these lifter issues. might try that.

I think some cars just tick and some don't to be honest. I went through 2 sets of LS7's and then switched to comp lifters and got alot better but wasn't totally gone. After switching oils it got alot better. The only other thing might be preload. There are alot of right ups on preload just try searching.

The vid is not very good quality, but it just sounds like piston slap to me. Very common for these engines, and the condition described by the OP sounds like piston slap as well.
I would not worry in the least about it. My '02 slaps on a cold start, I just ignore it. I've been ignoring it for years, it's never gotten any better or worse nor caused any problems.
The oil leak has nothing to do with anything in regards to this sound.
Haha.....9 month old thread.
