New ls1 owner...Finally!
Hey guys...so finally after 4 years of wanting an ls1 car I finally got one. I've had a couple lt1's and third gens...but no ls1's. It's a '98 z28, T56, clean black exterior, clean tan cloth interior. Basically stock besides catback straightpipes(no clue if this is an acceptable setup) and 3.73's. I'm very happy with it. I bought it for $3,200, but it does have some problems that I'm hoping you guys could help me with. The first problem is there is no second gear. It seems like it just doesn't exist. You can be stopped, put your foot on the clutch, put it in 2nd, and let off the clutch and absolutely nothing happens. You don't even have to disengage the clutch to move the shifter to 2nd gear position. Any ideas? And the second problem is on a cold start...the engine won't idle and will barely run under 1800rpm, over 1800 rpm it's fine. After it runs for about 2 minutes it will idle fine and drive fine. Hopefully a common problem? Any help would be awesome. Thanks a lot.

Well congrats on the LS1 purchase !
Needs the trans rebuilt. 2nd is gone probably from beating on it. Either needs rebuilt or a new one installed.
Not sure about the idle problem...is the SES light on? Even if its not, may want to scan it to check for codes that still might be stored but the light isnt on.

I agree on scanning the PCM to look for any stored codes that might point in the right direction on the idle issue. TONS of things can cause idle problems, scanning is a great way to get started.
Sounds like the trans needs major work.
You got a great price on the car though, so even once you fix all this stuff it should be a good deal.

Thanks a lot guys. I was afraid I would need it rebuilt...but at least it's easily driveable for now without 2nd so I can get my ls1 jitters out. As for the idle problem...the previous owner just told me that it has a mild lunati cam and aftermarket roller rockers, but he doesn't know exactly what's in there. He says this is the reason it idles like that on a cold startup and he always just held the rpm at 2000 for a minute. Either way I'm still going to scan it asap to see if there's anything Stored in there. Ses light isn't on. I'll do that and take some pictures of it as soon as there's not a foot and a half of snow on the ground.

However, there might be more to it than just a cam. Could be a combo of that and some other part or issue that needs to be addressed. No "mild" cam should make it impossibile for the engine to idle below 1800rpm....cold start or not.

It has about 80k on it. And I'm pretty positive that it just needs a tune. It idles fine after about 45 seconds...and it's not a radical idle. It's a little lumpy but nothing big. It also still has stock exhaust manifolds, y pipe, and cat. Along with stock airbox. It's not able to breathe properly. That Probably shouldn't affect cold idle but still not good. I mean it still runs great after it warms up, idles a little high(1000rpm). Thanks for the help guys...I appreciate it. I'll keep you posted and get some pictures today.

Ok so the ses light decided to come on last night. I scanned it today and the result was p0103(Mass air flow), p0300(random misfire), and p0506(Idle air control system). So my guess is that the Maf is going bad and on a cold start up it takes a little longer to heat up the wires in the Maf and the car doesnt knkow how much air is entering the engine. So when the car tries to stall out it regognizes low rpm's and throws p0506 along with p0300 cause its trying to stay running so it misfires randomly. When the car is warm there are no misfires present. So i think im going to try a new maf. Does this sound right?

p0103 and p0506 together will def cause the misfire. Get a new MAF & IAC motor, get some plugs & wires and do a tune up. Then it should clear up. Save up $250 and have a reputable shop do a street tune. and you should be all set when your rebuilt tranny is ready congrats.
