as high as you can get it if your on jackstands, your going to need room for yourself to move under it and room for it to come down out of there, around three feet high from floor to bottom of car is how i do it

Yup I would recommend at least a bare minimun of 2 feet off the ground, the way I do it is remove the drive line, shifter and such, remove the bolts holding it to the bellhousing (it will stay there it wont slide out) Then I get under it and grab the front of it and the tail shaft slide it out and put it on my chest, Then slide it off my chest to the ground then pull it out from under the car. Installation the same way, Push it under the car, Pull it up on my chest then lift it up and slide it in.
Couple tips::::drain all the fluid first, Trust me -Trust me- Trust Me
wear some gloves there is casting flash on the tranny that will cut you
The tranny is at least 80lbs so when you slide it out be ready, its kinda akward.
I own a tranny jack and the way I do it is just easier, I dont use the jack.
make sure everything is disconnected, You dont want to find a sensor or hydraulic line still attatched when your hand is full of T-56.

Hope this helps

you can have a friend help you if you want to but theres only room for one of you to work where you will need to be

you could also use a floor jack but it makes it really awkward, raron explained it pretty well take his advice
