Default Choosing an air compressor.......

I would like to know what types of air compressors you guy use in your garage. Is small better than big? I have a 2 car garage and space is a problem for me. I've already looked at Home Depot, Lowes and Sears. The 3-5 gallon compressors seem ideal but are the bigger(15 gallon) the way to go? My primary purpose would be to air up the tires, blow off water, dust(on the car), sportbike, etc.....

Or is it a waste of $$? I'm no mechanic so I don't pretend I will open a "Tire Kingdom" in my garage!

Also, thinking about a ceiling extention cord roll up but concerned about the cord bumping my show car...........

Ideas and comments are welcomed and pics of garages if you have one!

Thanks in a advance

The small tanked compressors are good for filling tires and blowing dust/water off your car, and that is about it. They will run A LOT!

I have a 15 gallon compressor, from Campbell Hausfield one of the horizontal ones with two wheels on one end. Works really well for the above and has enough capacity to run small air tools. A air cutter or sdie grinder use alot of air and make it run quite a bit, but for my use is plenty big enough.

Got my 20 Gal. compressor from Sears, on sale. It was a return and didn't have the hose with it so I got it for $116 instead of $249. Works great. Check and see if they have any returns at any of the stores you mentioned.

Thanks for the quick response.......

I'm looking into a 4-gallon or 6 gallon or at most a 15 gallon compressor.

The 15 gallon does have wheels and it's banana shaped and this one is big enough for me and I would not want to go any bigger due to my limited garage space.

Thanks again.....

Xsta Z-28,

Yes, your "15 gallon" compressor is the one I may buy at sears. Campbell Hausfield makes compressors for Sears, their "Craftsman" brand.

Xsta Z-28, Is yours to big? Does it blow a lot of air without running constantly? Is it loud?

Don't go less then a 15 gallon tank, try to get one that's in the 15/25 gallon (vertical tank ) range. Any of the brands you mentioned will have something for you in that range, I have a small compressor as well as a 60 gallon one. I bought my 60 gallon compressor from Sam's Club eight years ago and it works great.

It holds a good amount but when using the air gun it can run quite a bit. Typically with the impact gun I can remove two wheels before it cycles again. Noise wise, it is pretty loud but the sammller compressors are typically loud. Size, no it is a good size. I have it tucked away in the corner of the garage behind the garbage can and under the tool box shelf. I bought a wall mounted hose reel. In general I am pretty happy with it, real handy to ahve to top up the tires, blow out the nooks and crannys of water.

Thanks for the feedback guys...... really appreciate it. I really want a quiet compressor. My neighbors will complain if it's loud. I heard a small pancake one and it was VERY LOUD. May go bigger.... maybe 15 gallons.

I have a 60 gallon Ingersal-Rand compressor running on 220v.. Its a bit of overkill but I can run two air tools at a time with no problems..

BUT, i got mine on the cheap since my step father worked there

Unless you need it to be portable then get the biggest you can fit and afford (to a point ) its easier to use a big compressor for small jobs then a small one for big jobs and these things tend to last a loooooong time

You will wonder how you lived without it.. lol

All advice is appreciated....... still have not decided and still a little confused. I want to air up the tires in my sportbike and my SS and blow off dust and water off those too.

This is the Craftsman 30 gallon/6 HP. Very good power and comes with an impact ratchet and socket wrench and hose for $329.99 however it is LOUD.

http://www.sears.com/sr/product/summ...Auto=YES&pid=0 0916553000&bidsite=&vertical=AUTO&com.broadvision. session.new=Yes

Or Home Depot offersa very small Campbell Housefield 2HP/4 gallon pancake style at 4.3 @ 40 PSI / 3.1 @90 PSI with a max of 125 max PSI and 3 year warranty for $200.00. This is a quiet compressor.

Or Home depot offered me a deal to buy the CH 3HP/4 gallon at 6.2 @ 90 PSI/7.6 @ 40 PSI with a 125 max PSI for $200.00(regular priced at $258.00)...... somewhat quiet also.

Thoughts?

I have a couple of friends that have loud compressors, both of them are oil free compressors. I think if you can find a compressor that uses oil you'll find it less noisy, I don't know how quite ( there are none ) you want but I wouldn't get anything less the 20 gallons. Today you're using it to inflate tires tommorrow.......

You might want to delete that link in your last reply, you need a big screen T.V to read your post now plus the link doesn't work.
