Default Scanners

How much is a good scanner to have in your car? Can anyone point me in the right direction of any good ones?

Anyone also have any input as to how well they have worked for you and your experiences with them?

I would use it for off-road, legal purposes only

I have always favored Escort over other brands. I used to have a Escort Passport 8500, loved it, saved me more than once. Sold it a long time ago when I needed money. I would get the new Passport 9500ix. Retails for $499.99. You might be able to find it cheaper.

What area are you in? Most of SoCal uses Laser guns now which cant be stopped by anything other than a laser jamming device. So a scanner radiowave (S, X, K, Ka bands) detector is essentially useless once he aims the gun at you and pulls the trigger for the 1/2 a sec that is needed to capture your speed.

Yes there are some that claim to be able to detect a laser gun but in reality it detects when the laser is shot at another vehicle around you. If he singles you out and pops the trigger, he has your speed before the sound of the detector even notifies you.

That's what saved me a few times. Radar Detector/Scanners are in no way a guarantee, but it doesn't hurt.

They have always been certified to do that. That's what they had before the guns well along with time measure speed traps. It's quite simply really, i learned how to do it in a couple hours with an accuracy of within 2-3mph. Yes i went to the police academy. Doubt i could still do it but it was fun learning.

Unless they are using a radar/laser device, there is nothing to pick up.

Yeah back when they caused cancer left and right. Hence the newer technology that emits a signal/beam for as little time as possible.
