Can wax damage your paint if you ever leave it on too long? or will it always come off with a claybar/dawn soap?

My thought is no wax can not damage paint, simply because that is what it is intended for. Anyone can correct me if I am wrong.

I am a fan of the dawn wash and IPA wipe (50% isopropyl alcohol and 50% water) before applying anything new.

I don't think so. i just got my car out of the garage after it sat in there for 4 months during the winter and i found some wax i hadn't totally removed from when i put the car away and a little QD and a microfiber towel took it right off.

I saw a car once that had been waxed so many times (by hand with paste wax) that there was no orange peel left and his clear got really thin causing it to fade out. He couldn't understand why his paint was faded with all the wax he put on it but over the years it was the same as buffing it to much.
