Gear whine question.
I'm about to trade my 2.73 stock rearend for a verified 3.73 geared rear end. It does whine when accelerating and braking but not really when its just coasting. Does this mean the gears are just set up wrong and this is the way its going to sound? Or do I need to put new bearings in it? It doesn't bother me a lot. I really want it especially since it isn't costing me anything. I just want to know if I need to replace the bearings. I plan to change the fluid as soon as I get it.

I have built rear ends for 30 plus years. No gears whine if set up properly-Period. The 4.30's in my Firehawk 7 5/8's, the 4.10's in my '65 Malibu 12 bolt and the 4.56's in my Nova 8.5 10 bolt are all quiet. Any speed, any gear, on or off throttle.
They are set up poorly and neds new gears to be quiet.

Yeah, I understand they should be quiet but they're not. I'm not worried about the whine. I just want to make sure its not the bearings. I don't care if its whining because they were set up wrong. I just don't want a bearing to be going bad and I not get it fixed.

Honestly i don't know much about rearends or gears. But from what i understand, and in my own personal experience with 4.10s in a 10 bolt, whining under acceleration, or even just light throttle when the car is just coasting, is typically caused by the pinion bearing. Most likely, just from a really hard launch. Did that to mine, and it whines like a %$#@, although strangely enough it quiets down a bit, unless i launch it again! lol
So.. ... i'd say if you already have it out and easily accessible, you might as well replace AT LEAST the pinion bearing and crush sleeve and so forth, check the tracking, etc.

This might work for ya, put it on jack stand and put the car in gear. (running) If it makes noise it's a bearing, shouldn't make gear whine noise with no load on it. Not positive on this, but pretty sure.
