whats a good gear ratio to run with 4l60E?
im doing an LS1 swap in a 69 Chevelle and was wondering what rear end i should look for. im using a 4l60E tranny and am about to have my ECM flashed.
I found a rear end on craigslist for $50 that had 2:73 gears plus it had rear disc brakes on it. it came out of a 94 camaro with an LT1. Im thinking about buying it but just didnt know what gears would work with my set up. my car will be a daily driver, but i still want it to pull off the line pretty quick.
thanks for any info!

Buy the rear end for $50 take the discs off and sell the rest. The 4th gen rears aren't really compatible with our older cars. Those discs are the same thing that baer sells for their rear touring kits.
I have 3:73's in mine with the 4l60e and I like it. With a 25.7" tire (275/40/17) I am turning 2000 rpm at 60 MPH, 2250 is 70 MPH.

The first gear in the 4l60e is very low. I would stick with something close to what the factory had which was 2.73 to 3.23. A stall converter will gain you more than gears. Here is a thread that talks about it

That all depends on what type of driving your going to be doing.. Daily Driver, how many miles a day/week ? What speed your going to be doing on the freeway/highway, etc..
With that 94 rear, you would have to most likely mod the upper and Lower Control arm mount (94 would not have the A-body teyp of uppers).. might not be worth it in the long round. other than getting the rear disk setup for $50 and selling the rest to recover your $50.
With A4.. imo.. the low to mid 3's would be a good all round ratio. .. no more that 3.42's (3.73 might be pushing your gas buget)
As rocky said. a good Stall will help out with that ratio gears.. I am running 4.11's but I have a 6sp.. doing 1750rpm's @ 65mph in 6th gear.

my chevelle has 3:36 gears right now, so im wondering if i should just stick with what i got. I would really like to use the disc off the trans am rear end, but just not sure how easy those would be to swap over to the chevelle rear end.
I will be driving all over the place so lots of high way miles as well as in town. i would like to be able to go up to 100 mph without working my motor too hard, but would probably not run over 80 very often. i just got the stock, open rear end that came out with my car, so i dont have posi or anything like that.

You can upgrade to a limit slip with that rear end and there are alot of kits for disc brakes that are a direct bolt on also if you are on a buget. There are better and stronger options like a 9 bolt built as a direct replacement to the A-body or even a 12 bolt but they will run you in the 2500$ range new. If you don't hammer on it to hard the 10 bolt will probably be ok with the auto but if you plan to take it to the strip ever weekend they say you best upgrade or it's just a matter of time before it explodes.

well the deal with the camaro rear end didnt work out. the guy wanted to keep the brakes off of it, so i didnt buy it. i would still like to swap some disc brakes to the rear. any body know of any rear disc conversions out there that would work well with a budget?
this whole project, i have been getting parts off of different GM cars, and am using as little aftermarket parts as possible, so if i could use some disc brakes off another GM car, that would be perfect! just dont know what all would swap over to the Chevelle....
