Default Got my Yank ss4000 on the way!!!

Ok so i called up Yank the other day and ordered an SS4000 and i've been researching all about installing my trans cooler and th stall and i just wanted to make sure im on the right track, i know this subject has been beaten to death but i have a few questions.

How do i go about measuring the distance between the converter and flexplate? when i have it resting on the jack and dowel pins can i just reach up there and push the converter back into the trans as far as possible and see how much distance is between the converter and flex plate? and if its too much where do i put washers? i just need someone to give me a rundown on getting the converter seated and measured.

thanks in advance,
joe

yes. you push the converter all the way into the trans once you get the trans pushed against the block and have a bolt or two to make sure it is completely against the block. once its flush with the block you make sure the tc is pushed all the way back and get a drill bit 1/8 (thats what i did and the 1/8 fit perfectly between the flexplate and the pad where the bolt goes on the converter) and test the distance.

Okay, so thats why the distance has to be 1/8 because if its a big distance then when you bolt up the converter it pulls to far away from the trans and boom. lol

if the space is too big, where do you put washers, im really hoping the space isnt to big, and i've been told it should be fine since im using the stock flexplate also.

yes exactly. basically if you put the converter on right then you will have the proper gap.

yeah i am as well. i just tackled a head/cam swap so i can now pretty much do everything this car can throw at me. it feels good to say i did every single mod myself. i bet you know what i mean.

i think its harder to do m6 stuff. i say that because you have to get the input shaft perfectly lined up so it will slide into the clutch/flywheel. i hated that.

yeah i know what you mean, i had taken the trans out of my 6 speed car so many times it became a 2 hour job in and out start to finish, but it's like that with anything it seems, haha. I'm going to be doing heads/cam on my z28 here soon too, and i'll be tackling that myself with a friend who's done it before overlooking hopefully lol.

at the very least order you a CAT flexplate. Its SFI spec and you can pick them up for about $70 shipped off ebay and maybe some sponsors here. The stock flexplate is thin, weak, and generally a POS. They are known for breaking around the bolt holes also.

This thread details your measurements. I did have to shim my SS4k btw.

Thanks, i went ahead and ordered one, so where can i get the proper shims at? assuming it'll need shimmed, and the shims go between the flexplate and converter to keep it deep enough on the input shaft?

I ordered the Hughes shim kit from Jegs. Over 20 bucks. What a friggin waste. I needed to drop mine about .12 and their shims were only .06 so I would've had to double stack them. Plus you were paying for a bunch of washers that didnt fit your application. I hunted around and couldn't locate any .12 washers, so I got some grade 10.9 washers that still measured .06 and double stacked them. Some may say its not safe to double stack, I say **** em Do Not use non-graded washers though.
