Tearing down a Rock on 4L60e lvl 4, questions inside.
ok, So i bought this Rock on 4l60e last year from a gentlemen on the forum here, Im not upset with what i got, after all i knew there was an issue with it. This thing has been inside my garage since i bought it a year ago.
Now that my factory trans is going, and will not allow me to finish my turbo build, i decided to take it to a person i know for going through and to see if its worthy of being used.
First off, it didnt look that bad actually, Pics coming, Close up pics anyways. The clutches all need replaced,
it did have the red eagle alto band, and beast sunshell installed already. most of everything that was said to be done was done, but we are pretty sure that the input shaft is not a hardened unit or the output.
Builder was wondering whats better about the aluminum accumulator pistons then steel?
and im wondering what the best clutches for this build are? trans will likley need to handle about 550 whp/wtq
we are ordering all new clutches this tuesday, a new band, and some other new goodies, but other then that, the trans seems to be in pretty decent shape.
and is there anything else i should be doing while im in there?

from the burn marks on the wide band it looks like your reverse drum is not flat I wouls suggest getting a new reverse drum or resurfaced. make sure it has the double cage sprag. Are you referring to steel molded input drum pistons? if so they are better because they dont crack as opposed to the aluminum pistons. as far as clutches you will hear alot of ,different things because we all build different. you should be good wih the stock borg warner clutches for the forward, reverse and overun however for the 3-4 I personally like the z-pack or the blue plate, but to be honest the 3-4 pack alot has to do how you set it up. I have seen stock high energy 6 clutch stack withsatnd some abuse just because it was setup right.

thank you for the input, the builder had suggested to go back to the steel molded pistons as well, i was just wondering if there was a good purpose for that or not, i will also mention to him about resurfacing the drum or replacing it all together.
He was also leaning towards the borg clutches. But he did mention raybestos as well. i will likely tell him to use the zpack.
Hes usually just a rebuilder and doesnt get into the "high performance" builds to much, but he seems to be right on par with what other builders have thought. Thanks performabuilt.

if the unit has the sleeve on it you will not be able to use a steel molded overun piston due to the sleeve you will have to use the aluminum piston the overun piston i see in the pic looks like the sleeve piston

the aluminum overun isnt a problem the aluminum forward pistons crack ALOT, you will be fine with the piston however Circle D does have a billet sleeved piston

to be honest I have not personally done one I really myself dont think its necessary for most applications. I just le the computer do its thing and find a good tuner

iim going back to my builder on thursday to finish putting it back together/fixing it. What should i look for to see if it does have the hardened shafts??
Also, Is there anything i should be telling him to make sure he does. As stated, hes doing this as a favor and is not used to building high perf transmissions. He does build transmissions for trucks for hauling and what not. But this is different.
