Default bad 10 bolt?

so i finally got a full legal exhaust on my car so now i can actually drive it. I took it out last night and ran into this kid with an 09 civic si who claimed mid 13's. First run i pulled hard, second run i pulled hard and shifted into 4th. it chirped going into 4th, followed by locking the rear wheels up and violently shaking my car. i thought i blew the 10 bolt and was surprised when i was able to drive away. time for a new rear? it seems to be shifting fine now. thanks for the input

First of all, stop driving the car before you hurt yourself or someone else. Get under the car and see if you can find anything obvious. Put the rear end on jackstands (suspension loaded) and spin the wheels and driveshaft. Listen for anything clunking around or any odd noises.

Possibly chunks of spider gear. To confirm, drive car in circles in both directions (somewhere safe). If it clunks then your spider gears are gone. As stated, don't drive the car. If there are loose parts in that diff. they can shoot out causing the 10-bolt, you and others damage.

What if it makes a whining noise instead when you drive it in circles??

It took you more time to make this thread than it would to pull the rear end cover and take a look inside. Pull the cover and post what you find on the magnet and sitting in the bottom of it.

Yeah, you will probably find broken parts inside the cover. One of them probably got wedged causing the sudden lock up.

If you hear a different type of whine when driving in circles it could be a lack of limited slip additive.

It depends on what broke. Spider gears only turn when there is a change of speed with the axles. Driving in circles will have them spinning the most therefore if the rear behaves differently when doing this the problem can narrowed down.
However, as suggested it's best to just pull the cover and see what can be seen. With something like the back end locking up the damage should be obvious. The thing is when spider gears go, traveling straight the diff. may act just fine, until a corner is taken and then all hell can break loose and end up in the ring/pinion.

Are you sure you hit 4th and not second? And like someone said pull the cover, don't do what i did and bring it to the shop expecting gears only to find out the carrier exploded.
