1st gen mustang: build thread!
I did a bit of looking and didnt see much. Im sure its been done at one point or another but here's what i was thinking:
I have a 65 coupe with a new 5.0 in it, which I was going to give a FAST ez efi setup. However, my TA took a poopie, and is now getting an ls2/3 setup. If i rebuilt the 5.7, put some ls6 heads on it with a carb intake and the same ez efi setup, i could bolt it to the t5 in the car, and id be in about the same place I am now.
Id need new mounts and swap headers, but what do you guys think?
UPDATE: Well Ive decided to do it... I guess Ill mix this general info stuff w my build thread!

The suspension/interior are done and the body is good, but itd get new paint/wheels. In the middle of 4 wheel wilwood swap (theyre bigger than the t/as baers ).
I think selling the intake/headers i have for it, along with the forged bottom end I could fund some gm heads and maybe even swap headers.. then id just need to do the intake/fast and rebuy all the stock stuff i just sold haha
any info on those other builds would be appreciated

Well the 5.0 that would be coming out (once it gets new heads) would be ideal for an FI setup, which could run 11s pretty easily. What im thinking is this would be a lot lighter, more fuel effecient.. more streetable in general (wouldnt even need a tune)
That said, is it still a windsor, or is that a bbf? (the 390)
I dont remember what vette/truck accessories look like, but it seems like gto/f body ones would fit great. Keeping the t5 i wouldnt even need any BFH time (like it sounds a t56 would)
Gives me plenty of stuff to think about while i wait for parts/try to make money. haha

Im wondering if that surprise factor would keep me from selling it (but i think there are enough of us ls bastardizers out there)
Yeah i dont know a ton about them.. its a World Class stage 2, whatever that means. I believe its rated to hp in the 400s (a far cry from my rpm "stage 4+" t 56), which im hoping translates to 'fine until a good heads/cam setup' cause if not itll hike up the parts list. I should have the rear looked at too, cause its factory except for the stuff im doing with the brakes, if im remembering right.
That other thread puts my budget to shame on this one, those guys were talking about full TCI suspension and racks and whatnot.. I had been planning on running the car with ac, but without power steering and brakes. Having access to ls accessories makes me think both of those are more probable, but i wonder how much id need it (got 12" wilwoods for a reason, ya know?)

if u you got a short throw shifter the t5 will last for awhile if you dont yank on it to hard. but unless you got astro performance t5 or a gforce it will eveantually take a poop on you lol. also would the t5 even bolt up to the ls motor?
would be a different swap though. its your car i say go for it

I think that'd be a really neat swap. I'm curious to how difficult it would be, my uncle has a 64 that's been sitting for some time now because he hasn't decided what he wants to do with it and he's also told me many times I should've left my LS1 for my 70 efi, so if this swap isn't too troublesome I could try to convince him to do it, would make a nice little driver I think.

So heres a question..
I was looking in the classifieds (as i find myself doing more often than not) and i noticed how cheap truck pullouts are (no ****, right?). But it got me thinking a few things..
Even if i have my shortblock rebuilt and go with like a 355/383/348/whatever, and go with a daily driven setup it may be too much for this trans (the googles say a World Class t5 is good to 450hp/330 ft lbs, and i was thinking ls6 heads, so the tq after a cam scares me). Normally only cars going to autos need to clearance the trans a bunch, but if memory serves i believe these cars need a lot of BFHing just for a t56, so i guess id have the option to go auto/manual again (car was going to come with a c4, i opted for the t5 it has now).
The reason for even bothering to think about it, was how cheap a good transfer case was along with other pullout parts. Ive learned almost all i know about cars from doing it myself, and reading about it on forums, so im hoping to get some info here. If i was able to get a t56 or 4/6 speed auto in (pref 6l80, but i think theyre the biggest) along with a transfer case, what else would i need to do to get it to work? Would i be looking at fitting truck axles front/back (like dana 40/60s, or factory 1500/2500 stuff shortened), or would it make sense to look into import axles/suspension (id imagine thats more like IRS front and back than a trucks solid setup)? Would i need a pcm from the truck to control the trans/tcase?
Hoping that the awd guys come in still, since the title gives no clues

T5s are stronger than people seem to think. I worked on a Mustang with a 4cyl T5 that was driven by a total hoser, and it lasted 3-4 years behind a 5.0 before it melted. Quicktime makes a bellhousing to bolt a Ford T5 to an LS1 too.
The LS1 is almost exactly the same size as a 351W, so fit ain't a problem. T56 and 6L80E won't fit....you can build a new trans tunnel to fit the T56, but the 6L80E would hang low no matter what, because all of the added 6spd parts are below the centerline of the case. A 4L60E should bolt in without too much trouble; a Ford AOD is no problem, and the 700R4/4L60E is disturbingly similar.
As far as the AWD, I bet the truck stuff is bulky. You'd probably want IFS so Nissan Skyline parts or something similar would probably fit better. A Ford 9" would do pretty well in the rear.

yeah the skyline is what came to mind, but obviously would be the expensive route (Although im sure if i did any awd setup itll be way more expensive). What about subaru stuff? i wonder if the geometries are at all similar there (maybe a wrx roller could source a lot of parts).
sounds like it might be smartest to keep the t5 and see how i like it; because if a 4l60 is the next best thing id rather stay manual.
Ive also heard the ports are spaced the same, so i could get some tri ys (or even use the hooker LTs i have) and put ls flanges on and exhaust will be done
Would it make sense to go solid rear axle and independent front?
What are you doing with your 5.0 coupe?
EDIT: looks like skylines have the tcase built into their transmission... hmm

Yeah, you can use LS1 flanges on SBF headers.
Subarus set the shocktowers very far forward as compared to an early Mustang...I dunno if WRX parts would be the best choice, not that I know a whole lot about AWD swaps.
My car has a carb'ed 5.0...you can't tell it from a stock 289 unless you know where to look.

So headers will be easy enough; what do you guys think about mounts?
thats how the sbf sits there; could i just get a set of ls mounts with a bushing that would be of similar overall thickness to the one above and skedaddle?
