what does 4th gear top out?
at in a 1996 firebird formula m6 with stock 3.42 gears what MPH would you have to shift from 4th gear into 5th? the car has long tubes loudmouth 1 cat back and an intake. stock engine internals.

i know but i was wondering what speed i would be running at just as i shift into 5th. i topped 4th gear out the other day but didn't have enough ***** to look away from the road at those speeds, but i do think i noticed it was at 130mph.

I have different gearing than you, but all of my top speeds have been done in 4th. I had the same problem as you, every time I looked down too much of the road was going by so I stopped looking at the speedometer,

exhaust will have no affect on what speed you will be in a given gear, but with that being said.... Ive have seen my car at about 40-43 in first, 65ish in second, 90's in thirsd, 125 in fourth, and cut out at 155 at 5500rpm in 5th. this was a bone stock 95 M6 with 3.42's

Mine is stock with 3.42's and on a GPS "top speed" setting thingy it said i was doing 115 and I ran it right to 5800 on the tach. Although, my stock tach may be a bit off. My car hits the rev limiter at 6k according to the tach, but I have no idea if the car has a tune in it or not to change the rev limiter.

do the math.........
stock tire = 26" tall
so ur roll out is......26*3.14= 81.64"
81.64/12= 6.80 Foot Rollout
5280/6.80=776.48 Revolutions per mile of the tire
Now assuming a 5800 rpm redline....in 4th gear which is 1:1 gives you a driveshaft speed of 5800
So.....with 3.42's out back
5800/3.42=1695.91Revolutions per minute of the tire
We know the roll out is 6.8 feet as calculated above sooo.....
1695.91*6.8=11532 feet per minute
11532/5280 = 2.184 miles per minute
2.184*60= 131.04mph
so yep u were right at redline in 4th you should be crusin around 131 mph....
follow that formula and you can do the math beyond that.....
try this for math......mine will do 150mph in 3rd gear converter locked.....with 4.56's out back and a 28" tire.......whats that rpm?? (A4 3rd gear = 1:1 Ratio)
stock tire = 26" tall
so ur roll out is......26*3.14= 81.64"
81.64/12= 6.80 Foot Rollout
5280/6.80=776.48 Revolutions per mile of the tire

Tonight I tried out 3rd gear and ran it right to 6k. The speedometer went to 91 mph.

The way the fbody.org calculator reads it it would make sense that I have 3.73's, but I have put the car on jackstands and marked the tire. Then I had a friend turn the tire around slowly (so I could count) for 1 revolution. The drive shaft turned just less than 3 and 1/2 times.
