The socket comes apart and then you don't have to splice. I replaced my sockets last weekend.
Any hairline crack will allow moisture in. I only replaced my lenses once. When I bought my car they were cracked. I replaced them and put some 3M expel film on them and they have been fine since. One sense does have a crack but the film keeps the moisture out.
