how hard is it to do? and what kinda pump will be the best? and what is the best way to change it ?

with the motor out its a breeze...Pull the oil pan off and you will see it and the pick up...Unbolt and replace...


I would go with a Melling Select standard volume..you can put in a white spring too if you want more pressure...

what about if the motor is still in the car is it a pain

i love doing all my work on my car my self but i have pulled motors before but i have never dropped one out the bottom of a car yet is it easier to do it that way ?

Why do you think you need to replace the oilpump? The stocker works well and is pretty reliable. replacing the oil pump is almost never the solution.

the pressure on my dash gauge stays around the first tick. but when it is cold it is at the half way mark then as it warms up it drops. even going down the road at 70 mph it is only at the first tick but and at idal it is right above the red mark after the zero so i am guessing its the oil pump the motor has 189,000 miles on it but runs great could it be the gauge?

your trying to band aid it like that........its prob not the pump the motor itself is starting to loosen up *ie rod/main/cam bearing clearances.......thats why the pressure is probably dropping down like that......maybe time for a rebuild 190k is alot of milage espically if its been driven agressive.....

but wouldent it use oil though if things were wore out that much ?

not necessarily......the only reason it will use oil is if the rings or the valve guides/seals were in tough shape.......if the bearing clearances are opening up the oil press will drop but it wont cause it to burn any

ok then well i guess i might as do a rebuild then it does not use any oil but damg i did not feel like rebuilding it yet lol guess i dont have a choice now lol were is a good place to buy a stock rebuild kit ?

watch out for melling pumps. They had a bad batch last summer and mine failed out with 137 miles on it. Looked around and a few other people had trouble with them failing. It may be fixed but I go with a gm unit from now on.
