Default newbie needs some help

i just got my 01 Z a few months ago and i need some help. when i start my car and shift from park to OD or reverse it makes a clanking or slight metal tapping sound that sounds likes its coming from the rear. it also makes that sound when i first hit the gas but goes away during regular driving. anybody has a clue to what that may be and how i can deal with it. thanks in advance....

Check the u-joints, lower control arms or look around for anything loose. Then if no luck you might want to pop open the rear cover and have a look.

Peace,
Craig.

Have the i-pipe pulled loose from the y-pipe and but some anti-sieze compond at that connection. Some cars have a noise there from the y-pipe swapping directions.even tightening that connection might help, but usually the bolt will snap before you get it tight enough for the noise to go away.

no it doesnt make that noise when i hit bumps.

usually it will make the noise when i shift from park to OD or reverse, when i first get on the gas, or when i gas it up a steep hill (it'll make the noise in both forward and reverse).

thanks for all the help guys...

if you put it in neutral and rev it up and you dont hear the sound then that will rule out motor mount but if you hear it then look there...
if it only does it in gear look to tranny mounts...

I have a 98 T/A that does the same exact thing, It sounds like an exhast rattle, just for 2 seconds when you put it into any gear from park. I have heard the u-joint thing and the mounts, but have checked it all out, I put new LCA's on, and it sounds the same, I should have gone with my gut feeling on the exhaust (thanks IMKMFAST) but all the f-body guys I hang with were sure that wasn't it. Looks like I have an excuse to get that exhaust I wanted......"but honey, I just can't live with that noise, a guy on the board said if I got a new exhaust it would go away" LOL if only it were that easy
