Does anyone have any experience with running a factory LS3 cam (204/211 .551/.525 117) combined with gen III cathedral port heads?

That wouldn't be worth the effort to swap it.

If I recall correctly, that is basically a hybrid of an '01 and '02-up LS6 cam, so yes, it will work fine. You just need to make sure you are using a front cover and timing set with the appropriate cam sensor provisions since the Gen IV cam will not have a reluctor on the rear of the cam.

why not pick up a ls7/9 cam for 100 bucks?

Well I'm putting together the engine right now from a fresh shortblock, and I happen to have a stock cam out of an LS3 and a set of 5.3 cathedral port heads. The engine block itself is a gen IV aluminum 5.3.

That's one issue that has already been found out, that I will need a different front cover than a gen III. I wasn't sure how well the cam would run with the older heads because of the higher difference in degrees between intake and exhaust.

What are the specs and advantages of the LS7 and LS9 cams compared to the LS3?

If I was going to choose a factory cam to install in a 5.3 that would be the one
