LS1 vs LS6

LS1 vs LS6
Just trying to clarify this for myself, Differences are Cam, Heads, Intake, Manifolds, and some kind of porting inside block that creates no power gain. So if you took a stock LS1 and Stock LS6 and installed the same aftermarket Cam/Heads/Intake/Headers on each they should put down roughly same power correct?

Don't LS6 blocks have more/different cooling passages?
I have a friend that met a guy with an LS6 block T/A (still had LS1 heads, intake, cam, etc) and my friend kept telling me that this other T/A was superior to mine, even though my T/A with "just an LS1 block" was faster.

243 heads w/ sodium filled exhaust /hollow intake valves, 204/218 cam, LS6 intake....
The LS6 also had windows cast into the block between cylinders, improved main web strength/bay to bay breathing, a bump in compression (10.5:1), revised oiling system, and a larger 85mm MAF. Might be some other small improvements I can't remember.

From 2001-on the LS1 was made with the LS6 intake manifold and sometimes with the LS6 block as well, for supply reasons. The LS6 block gives no performance gain and is actually considered to be a weaker block by some builders. Some companies will not resleeve LS6 blocks because of decreased strength.

agreed with posts above, but didnt know that ls6 is a weaker block.
I rescently dynoed my bone stock 02 z06 and it put down 360/357. Not too bad for a technically factory h/c/i upgrade

GM did make some changes to the later LS6 block to relieve CC pressure, they were blowing the backs off the standard LS1 blocks in testing due to high Crank Case pressures. GM claims the LS6 block will hold up better.

So bottomline you guys say they have roughly same out put?.....if you could choose either block which would you in terms of strength.....one of you says ls6 is weaker based on what builders say and the other says GM claims its more structurally sound? so i dont mean to hijack but if you were to choose one in terms of physical strength which would you pick

Lots of good info on this thread, I have had both LS1 and LS6 and researched differences in depth.
They have ALL (to my knowledge) been covered in this thread.
Small word of warning (you probably know anyway) regarding personal bias between the motors, it tends to len toward whichever motor the guy with the opinion currently Has. (LoL)
Having had both, (as have MANY on this site) I believe the LS6 to slightly out perform the LS1 in stock form due to heads,cam,and compression bump.
For build purposes most agree on block is as good as the other.

I see guys buy C5 Z06s and then do heads/cam/rotating assembly swaps on them to go drag racing. Why do they buy the more expensive LS6 car just to tear out the better heads and cam (and sometimes intake manifold) when they could just start out with the cheaper LS1 car and save some mod money? Makes no sense to me.

the water passages are different....the ls1 connects the front head ones to the rear of the head and ls6 only uses the front ones and blocks the back ones because the intake fits tighter to the valley cover. ohh and the valley cover is diff. too

Yes, that is what I was referring to. I was reading about ERL's resleeved blocks either on here or maybe in GM High Tech Performance, or maybe both. Anyway, in the article (or again, maybe it was a post on here in the Gen III Internal Engine forum) the tech stated that he will not try to sleeve an LS6 block because of the windows that are cast into it.

w/resleeving for max horsepower when they designed the breathable
crankcase(weaker structurally). Also people that buy c5s probably like the
fixed roof coupe look, vented brake calipers and 150 less pounds. Thinner
glass, aluminum perimeter frame, taller first gear trans, and 295 rubber out
back. Plus corvette guy likes the badges that say I'm a BAD ****
