Default For your diff carnage viewing pleasure **car ******

Cleaning out the garage today. Figured ide disassemble my broken diff's I had laying around and save the gear sets and plugs, then take the cases to the recyclers to get a few bucks...

If and when, (who am I kidding) when this current diff goes, I'll be fining the newest cast that'll mount in a V1 and try n put the internals in it. If it works it'll be a very cost effective solution at ~$200 a diff. Here's the pics....

Ouch...this happen with 'normal' driving? Such a shame those rears are so relatively fragile...

Be cool if somebody made a billet aluminum housing, redesigned with extra ribbing and such. IIRC, somebody made a steel one though...IMO, a billet aluminum piece would hold up decently and not be so heavy. Wouldn't 'copy' the oem frame though, but the integrity of solid alumium vs. that cast stuff...But that would be one big piece of metal to machine out!

tig weld some reinforcement onto the next diff housing, far cheaper than replacing the whole thing.

I'm relatively new to the CTS-v world, and newer still to the forums, but is this a problem with later model v's. I have an 07 with 40k miles on it and I'd like to know if this is something I need to be concerned with. This is my daily driver and I need it to be there for me. I do occasionally autox it and would like to take it to vir but I'd rather not brake it.

Try to avoid clutch dumps (especially with gumballs) and remember to back out of it if you get wheel hop. Unless you're aggressive with the clutch in auto-x, you should be o.k.

You're in better shape with the '07 to begin with as it has some upgrades that help somewhat.

redxiv, I'm sure you COULD break it if you keep wheel hopping the crap out of it over and over; however, I don't see any 06+ diffs breaking (more likely just snapping an axle). I've also not see any breaks on the latest 4th gen diff (came out in late 08). All the V1s wheel hop so even if you have the latest diff you still need some sort of fix for the hop (like aftermarket axles).
