driveshaft humming?
Have a humming noise coming from either the driveshaft or rear end. It's only between about 35-55 MPH (but is loud enough to notice) and is only when my foot is on the gas. Can't tell if it's the driveshaft or rear end. Where do I start?

chances are if its a new aluminum driveshaft, its balanced and has new u joints. so its not too likely its the shaft. more likely it is the rear, how many miles are on your car? 10 bolt pinion bearings like to wear just enough to loosen the pinion up and cause a new gear mesh on the ring gear, which is what the humming/whining noise your hearing probly is. Its really more of a noise issue not really a threat to breaking.........yet lol

unknown miles on the diff, 20k on the motor.
the diff has been beefed up a little. but this noise came out of no where. it went from nothing, to humming/whining.

I would not recommend trying to do diff. bearings if it's your first time unless you have some knowledgeable help and a couple tools like a dial indicator and torqometer.

I used to have the same problem. I checked the fluid in the diferential and it was a little low. went to Autozone and got a posy gear additive (which matched GM's part number) for $5.99. Then top it off (to the hole) with gear oil, and the car feels and sounds a lot better. Some one recommended AMSOIL 75-110w extreme gear oil $15 a bottle, but you have to order it (3 days at advanced auto parts). Hopefully this helps.

Great, thanks man. I will try this after work today.
Do I need anything special to get the top filler nut off?
