Default Rear diss blown, need help/options, Houston, TX

I'm new to LS1Tech (but not forums) and have had my V for almost a year now. Just put brand new tires put on it. Long story short, a friend of mine drove it the other night without me and from what he's saying, he did a hard shift from either 1st to 2nd, or 2nd to 3rd, and basically the rear differential exploded. Now I'm stuck with not only the dilemma of fixing it, but also figuring out whose going to pay for it.

Anywho, I really need your help to suggest options I may have at this point. I understand that going to a dealer and having them do it is always one option if you don't mind paying nearly 2k for the part alone than who knows how much else for labor.

Misc info: The previous owner already replaced the crap 05 rear diff with the 06 model and that's the one that grenaded. The 06 whined when I bought it but never gave me issues and I never abused it nor did I plan on it. We do have an antiwheel hop kit on there.

I'm located in Houston, TX. I appreciate any and everyone's input on this matter. I would search if I had more time but I go to school and work full time so I'm looking for the best timely and cost efficient solution. Thank you.

i'd call him a liar and tell him that you had GM check the computer and you found out he launched at like 3,000 RPM and see what he says.

I don't even know if that's possible, but whatever. Where was he at when he was pulled over?

Proving him guilty isn't really my main concern. It was obvious he was mistreating or abusing the car not knowing what it is capable of. Otherwise I don't believe we would have this issue now. That road he was on is bumpy too so if the car did wheel hop, once it landed on those new tires and tried to put down the power above 6k RPM, kaboom. He was in Pasadena, luckily only about a mile from his house. 2:45AM, I'm pushing my V home to his house...I was really tired, sad, and beyond upset.

I need to know what options are available for a fix, and prices.

you can get a brand new 4th gen rear for $1600ish and install it yourself. I haven't seen anyone break those but you'll still get tons of wheel hop so get some aftermarket axles too. Call Luke at Lindsay Cadillac for a new rear at that price.

I doubt the diff u broke is an 06. The previous owner most likely lied. Anyhow, get one from Luke.1600, and install it yourself. Also, it doesn't take abuse to break an earlier rear diff.

Ok so Luke at Lindsay Cadillac, 1600, noted.

As far as verifying if in fact it is an 06 diff, isn't there a label on there I can check? I'm not saying the previous owner did lie about swapping it out, but I guess there's always the possibility. As I said he replaced his 05 because it was whining, then the 06 ended up whining as well later on. I noticed you said it doesn't take abuse and that's what I've read a lot as well. However, the previous owner did admit to tracking the 06 rear diff a few times, and maybe even causing it to whine like his previous one.

I just called Lindsay but Luke is gone for the day. Does anyone have a model # for the newest 4th gen one that can work for my application?

Have you put the car on ramps or jack stands to confirm the diff broke, before you order a new one make sure you didn't break an axle.

Or if there is a pool of gear oil where the car stopped you can safely say the diff broke.

Take a pic of the rear of the diff from underneath the car. You can tell the difference if you know what to look for without even seeing the part #

What 'GulfM3' & 'big reg' said 1st. ~ Everything else is speculation.

Legally you are responsible for the entire fix.
Morally your friend should offer his time & money.

I hope it works out for both you guys ~ good luck.

Those particular part numbers for the Diffs were orginally posted my me.
I edited that post, but some guys have not been aware that the 2nd part no. is not correct.
Sorry for the confusion. I found out that the 12378261 part number is for an outdated Diff fluid.
1st --- 10361308 (04 and Some 05)
2nd--- 10368780 (05 and very few 06)
3rd--- 15793756 (06-07)
4th --- 25873498 current replacement & supersedes all others.

Thanks a lot for all the replies and valuable info. Yes I got the list of all the different generations already. Yes Pyle Bro's is still around but they said they couldn't help me unless I sourced the part myself and they could do labor for ~700. Sorry there are no pics as it was 3AM by the time I got it to his house and I had no good camera on me. The car still is sitting at his house so the next chance I get I will go there and get pics and post them. I too am worried the axle may be broken but I will further diagnose it when I have time to go there and put her up in the air.
