Head over to the drivers side and look at the back, left hand deck of the block above the transmission pan. It will be kind of hard to see, so you might need a mirror and a flashlight, but otherwise, it's pretty clearly seen. The casting number 12561168 tells you it's an LS6 block.

i think this info and the fact that all 01+ cars come with an ls6 intake should be stickied and plastered all over this forum

Is this to see if there is an ls6 block in an ls1? Read something in a magazine once about how the last couple of of year camaros/TA's might have an ls6 block. Is this true? If so what years?

wouldn't really matter if it did
Yes, and LS6 block and an LS1 block are exactly the same (except the casting number). Really, LS6 shouldn't be called an engine but a setup instead. The only difference between and LS6 and LS1 is the heads/cam (intake if not at 01-02). SO...an LS6 block is an LS1 block with a different casting number. If I were you, i wouln't trouble myself with the hassle of checking the block because it's just a number.

Actually the block IS different.
"LS1 blocks have a 28.5 mm ventilation hole drilled through the center of all 5 bulkheads, close to the crank, for bay-to-bay breathing. LS6's have a much larger cast in holes (or "cast-in hone-over hole travel vent window" in GM talk) through the 2,3, and 4 bulkheads towards the bottom of the cylinder bores on both sides. According to GM, the 2,3, and 4 bulheads are the only ones that have an affect on bay-to-bay breathing. This change created 87% more ventilation over the LS1 block and less pumping loss at high RPM's. No official HP gains were reported, but the end factor is that the LS6 blocks durability was increased drastically over the LS1 block."
This is from an article in GMHighTech a couple of months back.

the numbers should be engraved...
the method stated b4 is the only way to tell for sure...
no the ls6 block does not make anymore hp then the ls1...
but no they are not the same block... there are subtle differances...
ls6 block gets better oiling passages...
(hmmm come to think of it maybe thats why some fbodys dont durn oil so much as other?)
