Cam for 383...
Well I am currently building a 13:1 CR 383 LS1 after a spun bearing that made the stock crank unusable.
The car will be running a stock LS1 intake, ported throttle body, and mildly ported 853 heads. Valve springs are being upgraded to better beehive springs and pushrods are being upgraded as well. Towards the end of summer the intake and TB will be upgraded to FAST 90mm setup. Motor runs speed density using an Electromotive TEC GT standalone.
Car weighes in at just over 2,800lbs wet and is running a TH400 with a 3600rpm stall. The car is used for drag racing only and very occasional street use.
Looking for power in the 3,500-6,000 rpm range with a peak somewhere in the 450-500whp range. Can anyone recommend a cam that might suit what I am looking for? Looking for decent driveability where the car doesn't stall at a stop and I don't need to use dual springs due to lift. I do not expect it to rev beyond 7,000rpm's unless needed due to gear ratios.
I 100% understand that the heads, intake and TB are not a good setup hence why they will be swapped quickly.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Get some afr205 or tfs 215, with a 23x/23x 59x/60x range cam. A good cam for 853 heads and an aftermarket are gonna be different. So unless you plan on going into the engine multiple times I suggest saving and matching the entire top end at once. Should make crazy tq and midrange and get u right under 500 with your tranny.

You coulf try, but im willing to bet in the long run youll want to go with better heads and have to start from scratch. At the very least go get some 243's. There are so many cams out there its impossible to pick. But if your not as concerned with 6500+ rpm and are looking for some nice low and midrange power look into cams with durations in the 230's and lifts just under 600. Alot of people seem to use the torquer cam from tsp.

MS4 or Vindicator range would be nice. Low 240's intake /upper 230's exhaust. I usually stay out of cam threads but I think they will make great power with those heads and peak where you want....
Actually I inverted my #'s...Upper 230's intake mid 240's exhaust as a general recommendation. Codered2000SS ran 10.90's all motor with prc 5.3's/Fast 90/90 MS4 etc...... Went 9's on spray..

Unfortunately the money spent on heads will have less payback for me then spending the same amount of money on my suspension. IRS on the Nissan 350z is not good for the track at all. Currently saving up for converting to a Ford 9" or 12-bolt and four link suspension.

I'd go for the ms4, it will work with your heads and work even better later down the road when you get better heads...plus the extra cubes of the 383 will tame it down

Would I be better off putting the money for cams, springs and pushrods towards nitrous instead? Then when I upgrade the heads and manifold just spec a cam then?
Like I said my goal is 450-500whp at the track. Don't really car what it is on the street and I might only race twice a month. I plan on running nitrous eventually anyways.

Looked at he cams mentioned above and as mentioned there are a number of good choices available out there. I'm working with Steve Morris Engines to see if they can spec me a cam for my goals.
Still undecided if I should do the cam now or just spray it the rest of the season and do the cam at the same time as the heads and manifold.

I run a comp lsl cam with trick flow 215 on my 402. The torque is plain stupid and it drives like a stock car, cold ac, no surge whatsoever. Cam is a 239/243 624/624 on a 112+2. Makes just over 500rwhp and about 470tq, but the curve is soo flat. I could do better with 1 7/8 headers and 3" exhaust but its a cruiser anyway. Go with a torqey low/midrange set up, lsx cars in general holf hp well past 6000rpm its the ones who get it done before those rpms that run the best times.

So everything is in process now. Does anyone have any input on if my cranking pressure will be too high if I put the stock cam back in for now?
I want to make sure I don't get bad piston slap and punch out a bearing because the stock cam doesn't have enough overlap to bleed off some of the pressure.
