checking backlash, which way to move ring gear??

Default checking backlash, which way to move ring gear??

im trying to check backlash, i have the dial indicator setup,i tried to move the ring gear back and forth and side to side, it only wants to spin.
any help is appreciated

it is a very 'small/tiny' movement you're trying to measure !
let's say you're trying to measure .008" backlash on a 7.625 ring gear,that equates to only 1/8 of a degree,a very small amount of movement.
if your pinion preload is 10-30 in.lbs,that should be enough to keep the pinion from rotating while your watching the indicator.
or somehow hold/keep the pinion from rotating(absolutely no movement) and then watch the indicator while you're moving the ring gear back & forth.
check in a couple places to verify no runout.

Moving the ring gear towards the pinion will reduce backlash and tighten it up. Away will increase and loosen.
