Default How much gas is actually left in the tank when the check gauges light comes on?

I rarely run my gas level this low, but I was just curious as to how much fuel is in the tank when the light comes on.

I think it will probably differ slightly from one car to the next here, but for me, one my light comes on, I probably have...1.5-2 gallons left in the tank?

drive til the light comes on, fill the tank up, subtract the gallons you put in from the size of gas tank your car has. DONE

There is actually quite a bit in my car, on the order of 2.5 gallons. In my 2000 V6 it was more like just 2gal.

If you have a 99+ just do as above and try to fill it up right when the light comes on. Then subtract however much you end up pumping from 16.8gal.

The lowest I have ever seen my fuel gauge in my 01 Formula was way below the E... that was when I first went to test drive it and the salesman said "Oh we'll need to get some gas first." Never have run it out of gas though.

My lights only came on once or twice, but I think when I filled up I did the math and had somewhere around 3 gallons left in the tank.

Fwiw, on a road trip one time I had the 'check gauges' light come on and drove for 45 miles before I could stop and fill up. Never tried to figure out how much is left when the light comes on though.

The best answer is you shouldn't bother with this question since you should never run your car below less than 1/8 tank...

take my word for it 'cuz I rather get root canals that ever change a pump in any car!

I get 45 miles of driving after the light comes on.

One time I ran out of gas in the gas stations drive way. I then filed it up until I could see fuel coming out of the neck a bit. I got 17.5 gallons in.

I just got 18.1 in the GTO 2 nights ago..... and that didn't even come out of the neck yet.

Every once in a while I end up filling mine around the time the light comes on. I drive 30 miles to work, so usually when I'm just about to work on that last day it comes on.

I'll fill it up after work, it usually takes just over 13gal to fill. I reckon there's still a good 3-3.5 gal of gas left in the tank.

I won't drive more than a few miles with the light on though, that's my cue to fill 'er up.

I would have to say maybe 2-3gallons.
Another thing...I run my car with 1/4 tank or less unless im on a long trip. So I spend half of that time at 1/8 tank or less and iv never had problems

and its possible you may never have problems but its a fact that fuel pumps can get hot when the gas tank is below 1/4. the surrounding fuel actually helps to cool the pump inside the tank. GM actually counts on this to help it from getting too hot. so its always a good idea to try and keep it above 1/4. i've crapped out a fuel pump personally by not doing this.

If I feel my car start to studder from lack of gas in the tank then ill be concerned. You can tell when the pump starts to do that. Iv had 3 ls1s and never had fuel pump problems.

In the mid 1990's the government made some sort of mandate for auto manufacturers, to build in a reserve into the gas tank, because too many people were running out of gas and complained of inaccurate fuel gauges.

The LS1 from 1999-2002 has a 16.8 gallon tank, how many people have even put 16 gallons in their car at one time? I know I have driven down to almost E several times, I can't fit anymore than 13.5 gallons in the tank.

When your car is ALL the way on E, you should have at least a 2-3 gallon reserve, all modern cars have this.

Not sure how you got 17.5 gallons in. These cars are rated at 16.8 gallons... I don't doubt the fuel pump said 17.5 though, but something else must have been up.

Well you have a 3" pipe that runs to the tank itself. I'm pretty sure it holds the rest.
