Should I use a LSX 454 Cam (19166972) in a LS2 Build???
Hello All,
I am hoping that someone can give me some direction here whether to use this cam or not. And maybe some plus/minus on using it or not.
I have a new in box LSX 454 cam that I am thinking of using on a LS2 build. The engine is completely stock with about 9,000 miles on it. I am installing the engine in a 2,600 lb street car with the T56 manual trans., 3:69 gears, and 25” diameter tires. I will be installing some bolt-on items which are Fast intake, Ported 92mm TB, 1.70 roller rockers, and Long tube headers. Below I added some info on the cam from GM Performance.
My question is, will this be a good/acceptable cam for this engine? The reason I am considering this cam is that the cam kit is available to me without cost.

Valve Lift: Intake – 0.600 / Exhaust – 0.600 inch w/1.7 Rockers
Duration @ 0.050: Intake – 236 / Exhaust – 246 degree
Lobe Separation: 110 degrees

Does anyone have any thoughts on this at all??? Am I being crazy to even consider this cam for a LS2 setup? Is the LSX454 cam a good or bad cam?

that cam is actually very small, for reference my 418 has a 240/230 ish duration and a 640, 612 lift if i am not mistakin i dont know exact specs because LG wont tell.
but from research big cams do not do well with ls3 heads anyways, the size of that cam will make a great street car. the 110 lobe seperation would be my only concern it would be a rouph idle and you would have some low end lower loss with that duration.
My opinion would be to sell that cam and have one speced to your needs, for a car that light i would go with something that will make more torque down low cause that will be one fun ride.

put that cam in...
You owe it to yourself, it will work real good, install it with the factory chain, is low miles, straight up, don't need to play with the timing, then you must tune it, let me know how you like it, enjoy...David.

Those specs, .600 236/246 110lsa, are very close to what some big hitters are running on this board in their carbed 6.0/L92 head engines.
Just a few degrees more duration on intake and exhaust(3&1), yielded 9.80's @ 137 with 2900lbs for one guy on this board. The lobes on his cam are probably faster ramps than the GM offering, but the performance potential (in the right application) with that cam is very strong.

If im not mistaking thats 21 degrees of overlap. I most definitely wouldnt run that cam with LS3 heads. I would say screw it and run it with the cathedral port heads that are already on your LS2, itll run like a raped ape up top!!

For his 6.0 LS2 based, fuel injected, cathedral head, FAST intake combo, there are definitely some different requirements to consider vs a carbed LS3/L92 head engine.
In the carbed L92 domain however, an 8°-10° split in duration, tighter LSA and the accompanying overlap tend to be advantageous.

After reading the strings a good comment is made on EFI vs Carb. I forgot but now remember that the LSX454 is a carb setup….will the 110 degree cause any problems with the EFI?.....rough idle…stalling?
