01 trans am with mystery motor
ok last night on the eway i was messing around with my partner. he has a 2000 ws6, has a lid, 4k stall, lt headers, lm2 catback, and a tune....my car is an 01 trans am with a 5.3, ls6 intake, lt headers, 2.5 y-pipe, stock catback with flowmaster muffler, and a lid, untuned.......we was rollin at 60, an i hit the gas....thought i had em but he pullled on me bout half a car.....do you think its because he has the extra mods or is my 5.3 really that much weaker??? whoever had my car before me swapped a 5.3 into it....i never popped a head off to measure the bore, but it has everything that an 01 ls1 would have on it

there is quit alot of difference, your down about 50 hp from a ls1 and about 80 more pounds of motor. he was also tuned and you were not, makes a big difference sometimes. plus your smaller cube engine will not respond to power adders as much as the bigger clube ls will.

Might be down 15-20hp, but 50? I'll need to see proof of that.
This race was
5.3 with LS6 intake and 243 heads
vs
5.7 with LS1 intake and 241 heads
No way that's a 50hp difference.

327 (5.3L) engines make the same hp as 5.7L engines. Always have, always will, with all other parts being equal. They rev alot higher and there bore to stroke is as perfect as you can get. Go ahead and run all the desk top dyno combos you can think of, a 327 is gonna be tied with a 350 in the hp peak, but obviously lower torque. Always loved those 327's for there rev happy nature.

2000+ fbodies had 241 heads, and stock 5.3L truck engines had 243 heads that were stamped with other numbers but effectively the same head.

first off: not all 2000 year cars got 241 heads. i actually think most 2000 cars got 853s. i had a late 00 car with 853 heads on it.
second: not all 5.3 motors got the 799/243 head. his 862 is like a 706. they don't flow anything like a 799 head, at all.
third: an lm7 (iron 5.3 with weak head) will not make power anywhere close to that of an ls1.
OP: it sounds like you have a freak 5.3 or your buddy's car runs like ****. no way a bolt-on 5.3 with a stock 862 head would be within a football field of a stalled, bolt-on, tuned ls1 car.

dude his car only has exhaust and a stall, and i read 862 heads flow just as good as a ls1 head.....and honestly think there isnt much of a power difference other than torque between the ls1 and the 5.3........the ls1 is rated at 325hp right? and the 5.3 is 295-305? well the 5.3 does have a compression ratio of 9.5-1, and the ls1 is 10.5-1....so that should be worth about 20-30hp right there

862 flow like 243 thats what I have been told. I am starting a 5.3 build in a few months. I am looking at a TR224 cam(maybe heads and cam), full bolt-on and a 100 shot. I should be good for about 350whp on motor and 430whp on the 100shot. I am doing it in a truck.
