LS1 or LS2?
Hi im thinking about starting a build for my 2000 camaro ss. Ive been researching doing another ls1 but ive also thought about building an ls2. If anyone knows what the price difference would be, what complications i might have, and how you would have to do the wiring, i would greatly appreciate your knowledge. Thank You.

well i like the ls2 because more displacement and drains oil better among other things plus it wouldnt be stock so so the hp difference wouldnt really be important.......but i also know nothing about them.....just started learning about the little differences in an ls1 but thats not that big of a deal........I would say the biggest problem i would have would be not knowing how to wire it.........and what is a reluctor wheel and what does it do? what makes it better than whatever the other kind is? Thanks for the replies

its on the back side, and if your going with a new shortblock rout then I would upgrade to the ls2 because its only a few hundred more when comparing same parts in a short block.
you should decide what your HP goals are and your budget because theres alot of guys here(ME included) that know what it takes to do a ls engine swap in a car and what all is needed as well as parts.
If you are ganna keep the bottom end stock then I would just keep your ls1 uunless its high miles, a ls2 pullout will cost atleast 2 grand and 3 grand in long block form for low miles.
are you planning to build a motor up or use a stock pullout?

also to save money and use your stock pcm and harness get a LS2 out of a GTO/Tralblazer or SSR, the ls2s in corvettes have the 58x reluctor which is ok if you buy the 200 dollar converter box.
all your ls1 accessories will bolt to a ls2 with no issues. you will also need your ls1 crank pully unless you buy another one

Im gonna do a fresh motor build....im prob gonna buy another block and start building it either way then when its done just swap them (along with supporting mods)prob do a little work to short block, but definitely h/c/i......I plan on making about 450-500 hp.....so your saying the way it is wired now will work with an ls2 out of GTO? computer and all? And you said all the accesories will bolt up from ls1 to ls2? are they in the same place? Do i use the same belt?

For the purposes of doing this swap, the only things different on the LS2 block compared to the LS1 block is the knock sensors are are moved and the cam sensor is in the timing chain cover in the front. You'll need a LS2 style timing chain & gears and the front sensor. The usual vendors can set you up with these parts as well as sensor extension harnesses.
Injectors and stuff connect-ability depends on the type of intake manifold you bolt on-not the engine block.

itll prob be a while lol.....gotta pay a dude 3400 bucks for the car to be paid off and pay off some debts.....then get a geo metro or something lol and prob a truck....hope to start the build in about a yr.....the current motor is pretty much stock except for from what i was told by guy i got it from ls6 intake, built t56 with heavy duty springs and synchros, hooker LTs, no cats, cutout, and what i believe to be is slp lm of some sort, whatever it came with......i think its putting about 360-370 to the wheels not real sure
