Help: LS2 402ci - Custom grind cam 256/264 .609/.601
I would like to get your thoughts on this build. Under it's current tune it's having issues with bucking etc under 3k rpm. I'm wondering if you all think this setup can be tuned to be drivable down to 1,500 rpm? (IF NOT what would you recommend changing).
Engine-
1. New 402ci LS2 block
2. Callies Magnum crank
3. Callies Compstar rods
4. Diamond Pistons
5. Custom grind cam, 256/264 duration with .609/.601 lift
6. High flow oil pump
7. Ported AFR 225 heads.
8. Ported LSX 90mm intake
9. Nick Williams 90mm throttle body
10. Underdrive pulley
11.Kooks headers and Y pipe, no cats, SLP Dual Dual exhaust
6spd manual trans
4.10 gears
Engine made 540 RWHP and almost 500ftlbs of torque on a fat tune

That is a monster cam! What kind of transmission does it have. I would think that cam would be designed for at least a 5k stall. If you have a 6 speed or small stall its prolly too big.

I agree, way to much duration on that cam, you should swap it out for something a little less on duration and a little bit higher on lift should help with the bucking, also I have heard the larger the intake the better the low rpm idle on big cube motors with big cams, maybe try stepping up to a 102/102 and retune? from what ive heard the issue is it not getting enouph air on idle threw the TB with big cams some guys drill holes in the tb plate to relieve this.
if you can afford to swap cams you may want to look into it, cause your only sacraficing low end power (ALOT OF IT) for not much more top end

Just run a lot of gear and you'll be grinning. 4.10's minimum. Guys saying cam is too big are loco. Too big to drive around the city in rush hour, maybe. You'll hammer other cars with similar cubes and smaller cams, think about that before you consider swapping cams, haha.

I don't actually own the vehicle yet (until end of this week), so i am hoping to get the cam sheet then.
Just run a lot of gear and you'll be grinning. 4.10's minimum. Guys saying cam is too big are loco. Too big to drive around the city in rush hour, maybe. You'll hammer other cars with similar cubes and smaller cams, think about that before you consider swapping cams, haha.
With that in mind, do you think it can be wrestled down to 2k?

It has 4.10 gears currently. I am planning to daily drive this beast (for the better part of the year). I don't mind driving it around town at 2k rpm....but 3-3.5k all the time seems way off.

You have way more cam and a little more displacement, it may be possible to cruise at like 2200 or something.
I will add that my car FEELS LIKE COMPLETE **** WITH THIS CAM and a 6 speed. I know I would loose to a small cammed 346 for sure because I am making no power until like 4500 rpm. I had Pat G spec me a 23x 24x cam for more midrange. I will be installing it friday.
I would 100% change the cam, you are making your car slower by keeping it. Even if you put 4.56 gears in, I think you would be faster with a normal cam.

My 383 is similar to urs, tfs 225 heads, fast 102... I can let you know how it does with the smaller cam.

My 454 made over 700 at the crank with only 251 @ .050" intake duration.
If I were you I would either run a Comp shelf cam 239/247 114+2, that cam has made 630 hp at the crank on a pump gas 408 with a Fast, or one step up from that which would be a 243/251 113+2 Anything more than this is just giving up bottom end torque for top end horsepower.
I think your cam is WAY too big, but I'm a fan of doing more with less.

For a daily, that cam really is prob. too big, I ran a similar grind solid roller in my 383 tpi (miniram) car. But that car was for weekends only. If I were you i'd buy a beater tercel or something and keep your current cam and run more gear, 4.56's. But if you insist this ride be your daily, a smaller cam will make you a lot happier bro.

no but in all honesty it is WAY to big for something you want to daily drive, plus you dont have the intake to even use the extra power it will make you will wind up peaking hp early and have a flat hp curve till you redline.
alot of people dont understand for a good street cam it needs to be on the lines of a good ROAD RACE cam, it should make good power under the curve as well as make good power up top. you wont have any fun with that car when you go to get on the gas and you get nothing back from it cause its still bogged down cause its not in its power range, plus the idling will eventually drive you nuts.
my 418 has a LG g6x5 or some **** like that somewhere in the 230/240 duration I belive and has 64x lift and 61x exhaust and it makes great power, made 505 threw a auto on a gto an made 505 tq before 4krpms
you know you have a good build when it makes its cube number in torque before 3500rpms, and i bet with your cam the power level is way higher you probably have a very narrow power level with that cam and a intake not big enouph to support it.
I would still recommend a cam swap for something way more streetable and that will make good power threw more rpms.
I would actually talk to Patrick G here on the forum, he can spec a cam for you that will get great results

Alright, i talked to Vengeance Racing about a cam swap. They actually built this engine and tuned it, so they are familiar with the setup AND the car is local to their shop. They are recommending going to a 240/244 .608/.596 112. What do you all think about this cam? Seems to me that it would be much more street-able, but still provide great power but be more spread across the range.
