Default Just replaced spark plugs and wires

It took about 2 hours maybe a little more I had stopped to talk to some friends that stopped by. I did the drivers side first no problems what so ever. The passenger side was a little bit more difficult but I finnally got it all knocked out. I also removed my egr and air accesories. I feel pretty good about doing the work on my car myself. By the way http://www.installuniversity.com/ has one of the best write ups for the spark swap.

I did mine yesterday. Took about 4 hours, but I really took my time and took lots of breaks to keep from getting frustrated. I removed the coil pack on the passenger side, and getting the last bolt out took a fair amount of time. Nothing like getting 1/16th of a turn each time.

And whatever Chevy engineer decided to use those bolts with the pointed tips on the coil pack should be taken out and beaten.

i have small hands and arms so its easy , and i just use a standard 3/8 drive wratchet and spark plug socket. the hardest plugs for me oddly enough seem to be 2 and 4. i can get 6 and 8 easy from the bottom with my hand

ive never taken off my coil packs but can those bolts be replace or are they "locked" into the packs themselves? Ive noticed thats one of my biggest problems is working around the spikes.

they come out easily.

just needs a 10 mm socket, and they're gone.

I know one is used on the drivers side to hold a wire loom, but the ones on the pass side, i don't know why, when i install my new valve covers, im grinding the spikes off.

I did mine for the first time this past weekend, put in the NGK tr55 + MSD 8.5 @ 42,000 miles. Took me about 4.5 hours to do it, but I took my sweet time. Stock manifolds. #6 was the hardest for me, but only when removing the wire. Installation was very easy. No rushing = few scrapes on the arms.

With headers it only takes a couple of minutes for me. I have big arms and hands and have to get to the number 8 from the bottom but it doesn't take anywhere near an hour.

JRP I may have to fly you out here, put you up in the finest digs and feed you at the finest restaurants just to have you prove to me that #8 can be reached from the bottom of a '98 with stock manifolds

it can be done as i did it, its just alot harder with the stock manifolds since the cat/manifold flange is right in the way.

Question

Damn, everyone is changing the plugs and wires, LoL. I guess that's a good thing. I changed mine out with the help of a friend and my dad and it took us 2.5 hours minus #8. Waiting to do that one whenever I have my exhaust done(near future). I do want to pose a question though...when you guys swapped them did you put the heat shields back on? I have the 8.5 MSD wires and the boot is pretty thick. I still put the shields back on but I was wondering if it was necessary.

Peace,

Justin

I did put the shields back on. Wasn't going to take any chances, and it sure can't hurt. There's a mechanic that lives beside me, and he strongly suggested I put them back on. Eh, to each his own!

I can change my spark plugs from the top entirely in about an hour w/not so small arms. Taking off the coil packs and valve covers helps tremendously
After 10+ changed from either my car or buddies it becomes 2nd nature.

When you take off all thoses items it also gives you time to do a little engine detailing on some of the parts and clean them up.
