Purchasing an out of state car, state ref???
So when purchasing an out of state car, do you need to bring the car before the state ref? If it has for example no motor no trans, does it go to the state ref and if so has someone on here done it and know how closely they look at everything? I'm curious about head casting numbers and if they pay attention to it. Thanks in advance guys!!

Get it a special smog. Get a Triple A membership. Get the car running take it to Triple A to have it inspected. They'll only check for the door tags and the sticker on the drivers fender under the hood. After that they get it registered for you and issue you ca plates. I bought my SS out of state and did it this way. Triple A doesnt check for smog etc.

I've done an out of state transfer before. DMV does a VIN verification they look for the VIN tags in 2 diff spots, ie Door, and Windshield. They look at how it's attached etc. Nothing about the engine so don't worry. CHP can verify it as well. You only have to get a normal smog, no referee, any smog station should be able to smog it unless it's Test Only directed, which most out of state cars aren't.

Got my answer today at the DMV, since the vehicle has no engine it needs to be non-oped first and start the registration paper process. Then once an engine and trans is in it they need to inspect it before it can go to a smog test only center. Thanks for the help bluemagic
