I think your driving distance is going to depend on what size and spec of cam you get?? And, I would certainly be getting the tune immediately after the install.

OK, should you do it yourself??that depends on you, if you have some mechanical ability, then it is not that big of a deal, there are several write ups on how to do this step by step. You will save a ton of money doing it yourself, take your time and do it right. Now as far as driving it without a tune,, Any good tuner can give you a mail order tune that will get the engine running close enough to bring the car to them. If not, You can get a tow truck to take your car to the tuner if he is close, for under 100 dollars,, I ASSURE YOU no one is gonna put a cam in your car for 100 bucks. Or you can rent a Uhaul car trailer for about 60 bucks a day, All You need is a truck to pull it, or a buddy with a truck. Which ever way you go, I would not recommend driving the car without a tune. Hope this helps.

Do it yourself, the car will be fine just don't go WOT until you get tuned. I drove my car to the tuner right after doing it. The money you save from doing it yourself will pay for majority of parts

I wasn't giving advice.
I was simply saying, that in my real world experience, putting in a mild cam and driving it did not cause any problems after 6 months and around 4000 miles.
If someone was installing some sort of giant cam, that might pose some issues.
