Which ever one gets you at peak hp across the line in the final gear you're looking for.
I put 4.10 gears in my A4 back when I was NA. That was great back then because I was crossing the traps at 102 mph and all. Now, with my turbo, my 3rd gear (A4) will top out at 115, but I "should" be crossing the lines at 120+. That means I'll have to shift to 4th (OD) @4500 rpm or coast through the last 300 ft in 3rd @115 @6200.
Different for T56, I know, but you get the idea.
You gotta run your numbers and see where they shake out for 3.42 and 3.73.
I'm not for sure, but I'm thinking you would be better with 3.73.

That's true. I'm going through the same issue with my 4.10s. I'm blowing through RPM faster than my turbo can keep up and make boost. I've got 0 boost in 1st gear.
The only reason I was thinking 3.73 was because I thought the T56 has a longer 1st gear already. But, it's better to err on the side of a longer gear (3.42) than a shorter one (3.73) to be able to build your boost faster and actually utilize it.
Again though, you need to do the calcs to determine where you plan to cross the line. Nothing worse than having to decide between getting one more shift in and dropping to 4500 rpm, or riding out the gear at redline. Again, ideally you want to be crossing the line at peak hp RPM to get the best run in.
www.f-body.org/gears may help you out. If the numbers are close, go with the lower gear ratio (3.42 instead of 3.73) to avoid having to shift. Also gives you room to grow (bigger turbo, higher boost, forged bottom, bigger cam, heads, etc)
As it stands, I'm going to have to drop back down from my 4.10s to 3.42 for my best setup.

That's true. If he has not changed rear ends yet, he should already have 3.42 gears in M6 car and should probably stay with them. Will help turbo spool better than trying to go to 3.73.
