Gears & Axles - Vibration after rearend install

View Full Version : Vibration after rearend install

I bought a used s60 last fall and have had a horrible vibration ever since. I have changed driveshafts, changed axles, changed ring and pinion, balanced the tires, adjusted my pinion and and control arms, aligned it. Everything I can possibly think of and still get a vibration. Is there anything else I can try to solve my problem?

Thanks, mike

Mike have you pulled the axles to take to a local machine shop to check runout? I would have them put them on the lathe and put a dial indicator on it to make sure you don't have a bent axle.

Brand new axles man. I've tried it all

are you 100% sure you have the right length driveshaft?

Balanced the driveshaft?

Have you put the rear in the air and ran it?

94dragbird

Yes and yes. I was told the torque converter could do it too. It does it the worst above 60 in overdrive but in 3rd it isn't bad until about 80mph

I know you said you replaced the driveshaft, but did you check the u-joints or replace them? U-joints usually vibrate more at cruise speed or upon deceleration.

94dragbird
04-24-2012, 07:58 PM
Yep. Checked them in both driveshafts. The are good.

Run it on jack stands and make sure the wheel are spinning true.

Already tried that too lol

Have you checked your pinion angle?

94dragbird
04-24-2012, 09:35 PM
Yep tried that too

Check the output shaft on the tranny?

Ill try that soon as I get off work tomorrow

does it vibrate above 60 with the converter locked? because you could prob rule that out then. also did you blow your last rear and lasts why you got the dana?

94dragbird
04-24-2012, 11:02 PM
Yes it does vibrate with the verter locked. The rear never broke, tried to avoid that lol. I got the 60 because it wad used and a good deal.

did you change the trans mount at all when you did this? Usually the Poly mounts are different heigh then the factory one and will cause one hell of a vibration.

94dragbird
04-25-2012, 07:52 AM
Put a new factory style rubber mount in it

Put a new factory style rubber mount in it

New mount before or after the installation of the rear?

Before install. Yank ss3600, flt lvl7 with billet shafts, speed inc chromoly driveshaft and a pst aluminum shaft, s60 with locker, stock length, umi adj. Tq arm and lower control arms, umi subframe connecters

Before. Its been in there since last spring(2011)

Is the car lowered?.. ive been chasing this problem for over a year.... biggest parts we have in common is the trans mount and adj umi torque arm.... what angle do u have urs set at and where did u take ur measurements From

94dragbird
04-25-2012, 11:45 AM
Not lowered and I haven't measured just eyed

More than likely your problem.

i would measure the rear end and the drive shaft with a angle finder.... add them together to get -2 degrees

94dragbird

Ill try it and see what happens.

Punisher_ws7

any update?.... i know stock ride height is sussposed to be at -2 but dont know where its susposed to be when lowered ... my drive ashaft is 0 and rear end is -3

I haven't had much time to mess with it but its narrowed down to the carrier or driveshaft balance/angles

Chassis mount ta? I'm getting a lot of vibration from my MWC 9" and I think it's b/c of the t/a being mounted to the chassis.

94dragbird

Its a full length umi tq arm with a umi relocation kit but it uses a poly mount

sully91rs
05-03-2012, 04:22 PM
Did it vibrate before the umi ta relocation kit?

94dragbird
05-03-2012, 05:09 PM
No. I did the relocation kit when I still ran the 10 bolt and didn't have a problem

Punisher_ws7
05-04-2012, 10:33 AM
mine is the adjustable umi arm with the drive shaft loop that mounts to the body..... i was told the axels may be untrue

94dragbird

Both mine are true

Punisher_ws7
05-04-2012, 06:25 PM
dud u have them checked?

94dragbird
05-04-2012, 09:09 PM
Yeah. It vibrates even if I pull the axles out of the diff and run it up to speed

Punisher_ws7
05-05-2012, 06:50 AM
what do u think it is?

94dragbird
05-05-2012, 10:02 AM
Its just about got to be in the house or diff. Im bought ready to give up on it

You said you tried 2 different driveshafts, what yoke(s) did they use? I had a yoke from strange that just didnt fit in the tailhousing right. It wobbled a little, like it was loose in the bushing or the splines werent cut right. I bought a new yoke from Mark Williams and it fixed the problem. Also verify that the driveshaft is the correct length, that could cause the same problem.

I'll give my two cents. I had similar issues recently. I fixed it yesterday. I tried a few things. I messed with pinion angle numerous times. My tailshaft bushing looked perfect and had min play in it. I put another tailshaft housing in with a new bushing installed. I also spent extra time to make sure the ujoints were fully seated in the rear. Very easy to mess that up the way these splicer joints fit so tight. I tapped them into the seat with a rubber mallet.

My vibration is gone! For the small price a bushing costs, it would be worth a try.

Edit, I reread the thread. Seems you have already tried this.

I HAVE THAT PROBLEM! I thought I had to be crazy since I bought it from summit and it was for a T56 but I guess not. What all did you to do rectify the problem?

Mine was a low mile transmission, so I knew the problem wasnt the bushing. So I ordered a new yoke from Mark Williams. Strange wasn't really much help with the yoke, they test fit one on one of their cars, said it fit right and they were all machined the same. They took it back though, so that was good. I read a couple of other people having problems with the strange C/M yoke. The Mark Williams yoke fit much tighter on the splines, the barrel diameter was a few thousandths bigger and it made the problem disappear. Now I switched to a 32 spline yoke, so if you need a 27, let me know. I am selling mine.

I need it! mine actually has a slight leak! How much are you asking and does it have a 1350 joint?

So is Strange replacing these with properly tolerenced parts?

I have to get to work now, but will mic it tonight and see if the OD is different.

I just got my transmission in Sunday and bought the PST DS with the Strange yoke last fall from a site sponsor. After reading this thread I went out and tried the fit and guess what, it has play. My 7 year old 350 pass Spicer is nice and tight with no play. The Strange is sloppy in fit, WTF?

Any way I bought it from a sponsor and just sent him an email to see what the options are.

Any one else had PST resolve this?

I think their opinion was that my car was some kind of fluke. I think that the way that the splines are cut/rolled, however they do it, is the problem. The O.D. was pretty close, but there is alot of difference in the splines. The Mark Williams yoke fit my car alot better.

I have measured both the Spicer and the Strange Yokes. The Strange is 1.4995 OD and the Spicer was 1.5021 OD. When the picer is on there feels like there is zero play, the Strange moves alot. I plan to try them on and use a dial indicator to show movement at the u jonts center to see the difference out there.

I think you might have something on the slpines fit though. I need to check for rotational play too.

Who sells the Mark Williams unit?

Mark Williams and Denny's driveshaft. I have a slightly used one if anyone is interested.

This was my problem as well. I swapped it out with a Spicer yoke and the vibration is gone. The U1667 I have is stamped 09/07 so it seems to be an older unit.
