Jy 5.3, is it junk?
I finally got moved into my new place and just pulled the cam out of my junkyard 5.3 to swap in a turbo cam. Below are the pictures.
The lobe is the third from the front (lifter turns free but looks bad) the shavings are on the back of the cam. Dont know if it matters but with timing chain off and retainer plate onthe cam has just over a 1/4 inch of front back play... there are shavings in other spota on the cam as well and some in the pan. Is this motor basically trash unless i have new bearings put in? Thanks

Clean the block up real good, blow out the oil passages and check the bearings. If they are bad just do a cheap overhaul with the kit from GM. If they are good replace the cam and lifters and go to town with the turbo build. I assume you are going to build a forged piston motor for it in the near future anyway so why not get it going as is now and get your set up together for the motor swap later.

I thought using arp bolts required some sort of machine work? Tbought it was just stock and kartek (sp?) that you could just throw in in the garage. Am i wrong? Also found this after i wiped the oil off the front cam bearing... is there anyway this motor has only the advertised 50k on it?
finally figurex how to get the (img) on my mobile app lol

The main and rod bolts are re-usable...look it up in service manual. This engine needs to be fully torn down and thoroughly cleaned, oil passages need to be meticulously cleaned. New rod, main, and cam bearing. It would be foolish to reuse the oil.
Great example of why a junk yard engine is.....a junk yard engine.

Sounds like i would be better off selling the good parts off this motor for yardsale prices and playing russian roullete with another jy motor. But just tare this one down and check it out before my 1month warranty runs out
