I was thinking about using a 20w50 Redline synthetic for the first 500 miles, then changing it out for some Redline 10w40 the rest of the way.

What do you all do for engine break in?

I was told on break in to use 10w 30 reg oil. Then switch to synthetic later.

As stated by Mike DO NOT USE SYNTHETIC to break in the motor!!! Use regular oil and change it after 500 miles to synthetic.

Your best bet is to follow Mike's path there. Synthetic oil is not a good idea at your break in. Change oil and filter in first 500 miles.

i changed mine after 50,200, then again at 600... i just used the cheap thick oil.... now im about to put in synthetic... i have about 800 miles on mine... the oil was nasty, made me want to change it every time i drove it..

Y is it that you want normal oil to break in a motor. Y not use the good stuff right off the bat.

I used NON SYNTHETIC 10w40 valvoline for break in, after the first oil change I went to royal purple, now after about 1000miles, I'll be running 10w40 redline synthetic

Break it in with Rotella T, or some oil intended for over the road trucks. The additive package is much better than a conventional oil, and will help during early break in. If you talk to the guys at some of the cam companies, they will recommend the same thing. Don't go super heavy on the oil. A good straight 30W is fine for break in.

I was told told that if you use synthetic's right off the bat the rings will not seat........ im going to use a reg. 10W30 with an Amsoil filter and change it at 500 miles then switch to Royal Purple till 1000 miles then drain it and switch to Amsoil's racing oil.

J-Rod, The Rotella T is good to use and is actually a little secret that the NHRA pro stock guy's have been using for years. Not sure if it is meant for the general masses yet! Use at your own risk people.

Straight 30W. Run a good multi grade after that for a few thousand then switch to synthetic.

I noticed a few people going to royal purple after breakin until 1000 miles, any reason for that?

Here's what I'm doing when my engine comes back, thanks PATMAN.
change at 100 miles, then at 500 miles, then 1000 and then 3000. Go with something like Pennzoil 10w40 or Castrol GTX 10w40

Then Red Line will go in at 3,000.

From what I have read you could even go as far as doing the first oil change after the first 20 minutes for break in.

I think my oil was changed 3+ times just during the dyno tuning. Very critical IMO. I then changed it after 500 miles when getting the car home. Overkill? Maybe, but I spent too much money to not spend a few bucks making sure the oil is clean and not breaking down. But that's me

as far as weight, on strokers mnost people use 10w40 dino oil. synth won't let the rings seatr, as stated earlier. switch to synthetic after about 3,000

No special reason for royal purple, personally I really dont like the oil and from what I've heard and can't hold anything agasin't amsoil or redline

I wouldn't run that first oil 500 miles, run it about an hour or two then put in new non- synthetic oil and filter.That way if any assembly lube,metal particles, dust or whatever will get flushed out before you run it a lot, a little extra work and money but worth it!!

NO SYNTHETIC for break in period.
Use a 10w30 std oil
run 200 miles and change again (10w30)
change again in 200 miles (10w30)

After that change when you want but don't switch to Synthetic for at least 1000 miles. This will help ensure that your rings will seat propperly and you won't have an oil consumption "issue"
